The best niches are found in the intersection of your skills, your passion, and your history. I call this your zone of alignment. To find this niche, I would recommend writing a list of the things you are most excited to talk about, a list of the skills you have that you love to use (not the skills that drain you), and a list of your experiences. Then combine different elements from those lists to figure out who you can help and how with your business. For example, I have a PhD in math, I create YouTube videos on time management and productivity for grad students, and I was a McNair scholar. Now, I help McNair scholars prepare for grad school. I do speaking gigs and run workshops and summer programs to help these students.

4 Develop your product or service

The fourth step is to create your minimum viable product or service that you can test and improve. What is the core feature or benefit of your product or service? How can you deliver it in the simplest and most effective way? How can you get feedback and iterate on your product or service? Tread carefully. I have lots of experience working with entrepreneurs in EdTech. It is a very noisy and challenging market where the chance of success is probably around 5% for first-time founders and higher for serial founders. A good idea and passion do not compensate for a lack of experience running a startup. I recommend working with an EdTech accelerator to understand the scope of a startup and find some industry people to provide support. Adding a previous founder to the executive team is a very good idea. Most startups don't do this because they are bootstrapping the business. Make sure you fund the startup adequately to have a reasonable chance of success.

As someone who has made this transition, there is definitely more to consider than product and focus. The K12 market is a very unique one with long sale cycles, ever-changing budgets, and regulations. It can be very demanding on working capital and cash planning. It's also not easy to establish or measure product-market fit within it because client needs evolve, and you have to adapt. Another dynamic is that buyers are not often the end users, and you have to balance delighting both. We often play a center of the eco-system role, connecting all the dots and building solutions that integrate all of it for coherence. It's definitely a space where it's less of a straight line and sequence of activities that drive success.
