Highlight freelance work, volunteering, or courses you completed during this time. If you feel you didn't do anything "productive" or work-related during the gap, that's okay, too! In your cover letter, express your enthusiasm for an opportunity to contribute to something new and show that you're ready to hit the ground running.

Recruiters don't look at cover letters first. They look at resumes, determine if an applicant meets the requirements, shortlists 30 or so whose cover letters they MIGHT look through, and then determine which 4-6 move on to the screening process. Now that you understand how applications are screened, if you have an employment gap in your resume, always include that career hiatus period on your resume. I work with a lot of workforce re-entrants and one of the biggest mistakes that I see is when job searchers who have taken time off to focus on their health (and yes, that includes mental health) or raise their kids or be the primary care provider for family members with health issues, don't include their career hiatus on their resumes.

Is this truly a concern for the employer or you? I do understand that there are specific reasons for gaps in employment, including job separation, health issues, school, etc. BUTTTT... I think this is more a concern for candidates than employees. Of course, red flags do go up if a candidate has short stints and gaps in employment but I think we are transitioning to a stage of employers understanding gaps more than not. However, addressing this in the cover letter is simple. "Now that I have successfully been able to integrate into the workforce upon my program's completion (or whatever reason), I am excited to vie for the role presented."

At the same time, emphasise why, after intensive self-reflection, you are particularly motivated to commit yourself to the offered task in this company in the long term. For example, if the topic is a matter close to your heart for a long time or the required to-do's are associated with flow experiences for you, in which you can fully immerse yourself.

Is it a skill deficit or an area in which you can grow? I think language is important. Be sure to talk up the skills that you do have that relate to the job so well that they forget the skills you do not possess. If it is a major skill (normally technical skills), become familiar with the system using free resources like YouTube and if you have to get the software to say that you know how to operate the software, invest in that. There are tricks to the trade. :)
