I think the project needs to start with solid expectations which is a lot easier said than done because hindsight is 20/20... Building an untested product in a new market consists of vastly different daily activities than building a common offering with a slight USP. Having done both, the grass is always greener. The need to find product market fit versus the need to build it better than the rest are two completely different challenges. Motivation needs to be based in habits and despite repeated losses to the competition you need to believe you can beat them or you won't try hard enough. If you don't think you can beat them, try join them? I'm being serious.
