You're collaborating on a joint R&D project. How do you navigate conflicting intellectual property interests?

Understanding the basics of Intellectual Property (IP) is indeed crucial before embarking on a joint R&D project. IP, which includes inventions, literary and artistic works, symbols, names, images, and designs, is often the cornerstone of innovation. It can significantly influence the commercial viability of new products or technologies. Familiarizing oneself with the different types of IP—patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets—is essential to ensure that everyone’s contributions are duly recognized and protected.

A comprehensive agreement outlining these elements can indeed help prevent future conflicts. Model where one party is the owner of IP and others are licensed may often be enough for the parties to exploit the results, but this may not always be the case.
