When coaching clients on career pivots, helping them bridge the transferable skills gap starts with identifying their key strengths. Encourage them to reflect on past roles and pinpoint skills that apply across industries, such as leadership, problem-solving, communication, or project management. Next, help them reframe these skills in a way that resonates with their new field. This could mean tweaking language to align with industry-specific terms or highlighting accomplishments that show versatility. Encourage them to fill any gaps through additional learning—like online courses or certifications—that demonstrate commitment to their new path.

I use a “skill swap” method. We create a two-column list: on the left, their top skills from their current role, and on the right, the skills needed in their target field. Then, we match each existing skill with its closest counterpart in the new field. For any gaps, we identify micro-projects or volunteer opportunities they can start immediately to build those missing skills in real-world settings. This approach helps my clients actively develop the bridge between their current experience and their new career path. Onward!

When someone ask me on career pivots, I focus on both their transferable skills and the hard skills they need to learn. I start by helping them identifying the strengths they already bring to the table, like communication, leadership, or time management—skills that work across any industry. Then, we talk about the specific hard skills their new career might require. I encourage them to see learning as an opportunity, whether through online courses, side-hustle, additional projects at their current work, or even further education (i.e MBAs, etc). It’s about bridging the gap with confidence and a clear time-bound plan and execution.
