Having an ITSM solution that can act as an asset management tool, helpdesk tracking and workflow tool for moves/adds/changes is a lifesaver. It helps keep track at budget time of your expenses, find problems by being able to correlate issues, and provide audit level detail for tasks to show compliance with your security and other compliance programs. I can’t think of any reason that a company should not have an ITSM suite because it only benefits all aspects of your IT operations.

There are lots of tools out there that can handle these functions. Look for tools with the lightest weight agent, most robust work flow processes including creation of request forms, and can help keep an accurate up to date inventory. Don’t try to host and set it up yourself. Leverage the power of the cloud and that way your data is always available when it’s needed and not dependent on infrastructure that could be knocked off line or left unavailable
