When looking at starting a new venture for me it is important to soul search to see what you actually want to do and why you want to do it, who will want it and how much you think they will be willing to pay for it? Be honest with yourself and ask why you think it is worth you sinking you hard earned money into this idea and what you think you can do differently to capture market share and what issue you are solving for the customer. Making sure this business fits with your values and aspirations rather than just simply creating a business that just soaks up more of your time, sacrifices your mental health and fails to deliver the benefits that you dreamed or hoped for. Ensure you have a strong why before you start.

Your purpose is probably the most significant thing in your DNA re who you are, what you stand for, your values and what makes you get up in the morning! I once heard it being said that the 2 most important dates in your life are; 1. The day you are born and 2. The day you discover the reason why? Your purpose ties in with why you are here, why on this planet, who you are and what is the purpose in you being here? You can choose to float through life caring about little or anyone else but in reality, no man/woman is an island and having a purpose is an important part of peace, fulfilment and success. Without purpose, success can often be empty. Without purpose it is hard to have peace in your life. Purpose is the real difference for us all

For example - "increase our brand awareness" sounds great in a meeting but doesn't help measure progress. Consider data based metrics ie. "get 5,000 connections with [industry] connections on LinkedIn". Create CLEAR and MEASURABLE expectations for the team and then set standard meetings to inspect what you expect.

Develop three things to maintain sanity around strategic choices 1) 3-6 month ground level operational project plan: Be as detailed as you can be focusing on what are you solving for; steps that will get you there; success criteria; timing and budget. 2) 6-12 month growth plan: develop a growth plan on big ticket items such as people needs, revenue generation, channel strategy, partnerships, product development goals. 3) A three year vision plan - this can be a single page with half a dozen bullets answering the questions around size (revenue and profit), services/product, people, geography, and customers.
