You're a Business Intelligence (BI) professional. How do you evaluate your own work?

BI/Analytical projects are hard to measure. You can always monitor the usage by using KPIs such as number of distinct users, number of sessions, sessions duration but they will not tell the whole story. The best approach for measuring analytics projects is the good old human interaction. Have a talk with your stakeholders, ask them to give you feedbacks, ask them if the solution support their business needs and helps them reach to better business decisions. That is the end goal of any analytical project at the end of the day, and only business POCs can help you assess the success/failure.

Going in blind is a recipe for wasted time and resources. We need clear objectives, measurable outcomes, and defined KPIs to track progress and ensure success. Otherwise, it's just throwing data at a wall and hoping something sticks. Also, one of the most important factors is measure with matters & drives action. To many times, KPIs and dashboard are created that just inform and most companies don't actually measure what matters and drive action. You should be able to look at your dash boards or KPIs and clear know 1) do we need to stop 2) do we need to accelerate 3) do we need to think slow down a little. This is my viewpoint!

One key thing I focus on as a BI professional is ensuring that my solutions align with the strategic goals and objectives of the organization. This involves regular communication with stakeholders to understand their needs and making adjustments as necessary. Before starting on a task, one first makes a roadmap wherein it's specified how will the individual go on about the task. A process is mapped out which could be in some cases proper or improperly mapped out but what's important is that the process smooths out the processing of tasks which one has to carry out. But, as the task is being moved forward with, there comes a time where it needs to be analysed for its performance to ensure that the progress is happening in the right direction and not going in some other not required direction as in the long run it could hamper the efficiency of the BI project. In some case, it happens that requirements change which a common feature in this dynamic world, so it helps in aligning accordingly.

Self competition is fine but is feasible as long as the competition is with ourselves. As soon as, other entities start getting involved, being competitive should be an inherent trait which should start developing along with the comparison. This is necessary because there are a number of benchmarks with which one has to adhere to or else the project won't be recognised in the first place only, forget comparing the work with others. Now, after benchmarking our work, comes the step to actually compare it with the work already being showcased in the market. As already the egoistic nature of humans make them think that their work is best but actually, it needs to compared to get the clear picture. Overall, in the end it improves the quality.

You can compare your work to other people in the same field after you have looked at your own process and results. This will help you figure out what you're good at and what you need to work on.

All's well that ends well. This almost 400 years old thing makes sense even in today's time also and would continue to make sense till eternity. A Business Intelligence Project is a dynamic thing which involves professionals and experts from various fields depending on the complexities and scalability of the project involved. A lot of manpower goes into this but what's most important is that the results or insights generated need to be properly and clearly communicated to the stakeholders keeping in mind their technical expertise or else no action would be taken. Also, one needs to make sure that their insights are properly delivered so that action is taken keeping in mind their insights also and incorporating it majorly in final decision.
