You’re building a team from scratch. What are the most important qualities to look for in new hires?

When I'm trying to add to a team, or start one ground up, I look for genuine interest and passion for the work. I 100% take attitude and character over talent every time. You don't necessarily need like minded people, but you absolutely need people to buy into the goal whole heartedly and be willing to sacrifice for the bigger picture, not focus on personal gains, but team gains and growth

Building a dream team is all about finding the right people, not just the most skilled. But they must also demonstrate a collaborative spirit, a willingness to learn and adapt, and a passion for the company's mission. Look for clear communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a positive attitude that will foster a cohesive and productive work environment.

I would look for aggression for goal as prime factor. Beside this I would select candidate who knows the geography and have product knowledge . Also it's very important that during hiring find out whether candidate would be aligned with organisation objective or not. Also I would like to have ambitious candidate as they can be motivated effectively

Smarts, motivation and a sense of humor; I look for people with an eagerness to learn and strong desire to build their skills to achieve business objectives, humor helps to destress.

During the new hire interview one should evaluate 5 basic things - 1) What is the candidate looking for in his new job and do you have that yo offer him? 2) Does the candidate have self awareness? Knows his strength & weakness? 3) How is his collaboration & co-operation skills on Team goal? Empathy? Respect for others? 4) Understanding, Analyzing & planning skills? Has opinion about things or not? 5) Fit for the job skills.

Definetly the most important skill that new hires should have. I am focusing in interviews on how quick a candidate is adapting to wording and behavior that I am using as the eagerness and willingness to adapt and learn is key to success in every new challenge that an individual is taking.

An insightful quote: The fool is the precursor to the master. "The thing about the fool is that the fool is close to the truth. You cannot learn anything unless you are willing to be a fool." The master was once a fool. He accepted it, and that opened him up for the possibility of transforming himself into the master through trail and error. Through the learning process which will inevitability have mistakes along the way, we become better versions of ourself until we have mastered the trait.

From my experience, a quality to look for in new hires is their ability to communicate and collaborate ideas. It's super simple actually - you can build skill and knowledge you can't build character. Per my experience if you have an individual who's clearly not a team player 90% of the time he will not become one. Cultural fit is a MUST for me when hiring, I can build me an expert anytime ??

In my view successful teams are not the ones where one wins the sprint and the others lag behind. Rather successful teams operate in a relay, where one passes the baton to the other. Great individuals with poor team collaboration and ineffective communication skills will result into a team failure. Average individuals with great collaboration and communication skills will always do better than the former as a team. Effective communication helps in building rapport, trust , creating learnings within the team. Collaboration with the right information is the soul of successful teams which sets them apart and results into the success.

Communication is the key to any successful outcome. People with good communication skills outshine the most talented people. If you know how to put your prospective across in the right way, you are a gem to the business. Find people who are calm and listen properly, cause good communication is possible by having good listening power. Skills can be developed and polished but good communicator is something which comes naturally.

Agree 100%, in addition to finding the diverse talent that fits the functional requirements. Being able to assess their team spirit is as important… do they know their role and how to support their team mates in their role? What are some of the common goals of the team they are on? Ask, what they achieved; and listen to how they have achieved it. How did their achievements help the overall organization and their peers; listen for the qualities of a team player and listen to their attitude and approach to challenges … hire attitude…

DIEB should be the cornerstone to any company’s mandate. Creating an environment that encourages their employees to bring their true selves to work, is so vitally important in build a strong culture of belonging. The diversity of thought and perspective that can be achieved should be incentive for all managers to prioritize DIEB in all areas of their business.

I think the biggest thing you can do is to look at all the roles/needs you have for the team and find a person who fills the space well. You can't hire a bunch of clones of yourself, you have to find where you/your team has weaknesses and add those people who strongly fill that gap. Diversity of backgrounds. Diversity of thought.

For me, I really like to hire for attitude and train for skill wherever I can, particularly for new teams, mindset is so vital.

"Your team will have only as much energy as you derive from them, for them; your team will be only as enthusiastic as you make them be" Leading by example - fit in daily on job learnings as an incremental improvement in your teams personal and professional growth, which should achieve the company's daily goals, thus motivating each member of the team and letting them know that the company when grows we grow, and the other way around. One cannot have a new hire have an already existing passion and enthusiasm in them which will flare right from the day they join. Leaders, mid and above have to tap that energy and then have them grow aware firstly, and then passionate about their daily roles and the contribution to the company and send growth.

The phrase 'skills can be taught but attitude can't' is spot on here. When hiring folks, I look at a few things: Do they have the desire to learn, are they a good fit for the organization, do they have the right attitude, and what do they bring to an already diverse table?

Excellent points Basak, and I agree with this importance. It is also necessary for companies who are interviewing for one role, but meet a best fit candidate who has a stronger skill set suited better for another position that would be valuable to the organization. Be open to pivot and carve out a role for them even if it doesn’t yet exist. This will lead to higher retention, motivation and job satisfaction in the long run.

Attitude is the greatest attribute I would look for to build a team from scratch. Their resilience to go through a difficult non-rewarding phase & their willingness to contribute to build.

Consider attitude first, Skills can be taught . Look for candidates who approach challenges with optimism and a willingness to continually improve.

We look at the person. We have 3 key factors that are mandatory. Do you show up to work? Do you have desire to be the best you, that you can be? Have you been punched in the mouth(faced adversity) in life? Our team can teach you the position, but we need the core person to have these qualities. We base our hiring solely on people, not résumé’s.
