You're applying for a Partnerships role. How do you show that you can think strategically?

Describe a situation where you have connected a partner's value to your company's partner program to your company goals to drive value in terms of incremental ARR, reducing churn or driving expansion. This is strategic to your company and strategic to the partner. Strategy is hallucination without execution. This makes it real.

I've always seen benefits to looking for gaps in the partners offerings. If they have recently lost business, or believe by representing your product in a partnership will help add greater value to their current customers. Or for their growth strategy help take them quicker to a target market, it's worth having the discussion and understanding the investment and commitments required from both sides to make it work.

In a previous role, I applied for a Partnerships position with a software company. Before the interview, I extensively researched the potential partner's industry, market position, and pain points. During the interview, I demonstrated my strategic thinking by articulating how our partnership could address their specific needs and challenges. It's key to contextualize one's company's value proposition to the target partner's strategic priorities. Also be mindful of positioning it as organically complimentary and not cannibalistic. The tighter the mutual opportunity highlighted, the easier it will be to structure the terms (give/sets) of the partnership.

When structuring the partnership, the more functional representation you can have at the table - product management, engineering, sales, marketing, operations - the greater the chances for a holistic engagement and hence success.

All the previous answers are very good and accurate. One tool that I learned in Grad school that always provides me with strategic direction for a company or partnership is the use of a SWOT (Strength/Weakness/Opportunity/Threats) analysis. When done right, it will give you the strategic insights and directions for a successful partnerships.

Identify if there could be other entities in the ecosystem you could bring to the table to tighten the mutual value-prop for the ultimate end-customer and create a truly differentiated ecosystem partnership. A common example when a tech platform company brings an ISV and SI together to offer a winning proposition.
