2 Research the project

Before you audition for any project, you need to do your homework. Research the genre, style, tone, and theme of the project. 4 Be professional and respectful

Casting directors are busy and often deal with hundreds of actors for each project. That’s why you need to be professional and respectful at all times. That means you need to follow the instructions, arrive on time, dress appropriately, bring your headshot and resume, and be ready to perform. It also means you need to be polite, friendly, and courteous to everyone you meet, from the receptionist to the director. Don’t be rude, arrogant, or demanding. Don’t complain, make excuses, or badmouth anyone. Don’t overstay your welcome, or try to be too chatty or funny. Be confident, but humble. Be yourself, but not too much.

5 Network and follow up

Casting directors are not only looking for actors who can act, but also for actors who can work well with others. That’s why you need to network and follow up with them and other industry professionals. Networking means building and maintaining relationships with people who can help you advance your career, such as agents, managers, coaches, and mentors. You can network by attending events, workshops, classes, and festivals, and by reaching out to people online or in person. Follow up means staying in touch with people who have shown interest in you, such as casting directors, directors, and producers. You can follow up by sending a thank you note, a card, or an email, and by updating them on your achievements, availability, and interest. Don’t be pushy, or spammy, or desperate. Be genuine, grateful, and enthusiastic.
