Your team's performance in Higher Education is lagging. How can you turn things around?

This is kind of an odd question because higher education encompasses academic departments, student affairs, health services, financial aid, etc. The team lead would have to diagnose the root causes of the problem(s) within the context of the department or unit that it's happening. Once identified, the team would then to assess the impact of the issue on the individual(s) involved, as well as on the team's overall productivity and performance. 1:1s or focus groups would be good in this context, as this would allow the team lead to determine the needs of each of the employees involved in order for the problem to be resolved and for the work to continue without further delay or hiccup. Then we'd devise an intervention plan

We serv excluded people and our staff reflects this.. Many have no schooling at all and I don't care. They could not do their jobs better! As a Yale and Harvard graduate. I am not sure about higher ed for rural NGOs .

Please start a new and fresh idea: teach the students only the things that they will remember all their lives. This has been tried and tested in an undergrad class with success.

Assessing your team's strengths and weaknesses is the first step in improving performance. The goal is to identify the areas in which your team performs well, the areas in which they could do better, and the gaps or obstacles that stand in the way of their advancement. You have to know your employees' strengths and weaknesses. You observe and listen and determine the best person to do the job. It takes a minute, especially if you are new or the person is new however you place your person in a position to succeed. Positions should be fluid. Managers should be aware of each position duty and be able to assist when needed. Gone are the days of the manager that observes and delegates. They need to jump in and get their hands busy in the game. As they say, "All hands make light work".

I agree! Set real priorities and clearly articulate the expectations. Stakeholders should always know what the top priorities are for the institution and what his or her role is in making them happen.

I choose this one because it’s most aligned. If my teams performance was under this is what I would do… 1) the team has goals to hit on a monthly, weekly, and daily basis. The team needs to know those numbers every day. 2) determine what leads convert the highest based on your data. Strategize on a call blitz only pulling those leads focus on the strength and stop all activities based on weakness 3) build culture. Your team achieves the results together.

In my leadership experience, you set realistic goals. Most leaders want to push their team too far out of the gate with unachievable goals. They spread their team too thin. By setting realistic goals, team members will achieve them, boosting confidence. Next, comes the increase. However, goals will never be achieved if the team lacks respect for their leader.

One of the great things we offer in Higher Education is a wealth of experts and data. Opportunities to utilize or partner with other teams on your campus allow you to build a community and establish those norms and behaviors for your team. Formalizing those expectations in a quick reference document your team has input with makes it something they're invested in. Being invested in the expectations takes your team to the next level.

Communication Communication and more Communication! Is critical. If your staff or Team is not aware of the resources and supports available to them they may not be successful at resolving challenges. Informing them of collaborations and partnerships that already exist with in the institutions is key for supports and they do not need to struggle trying to create new.

I will suggest that we hold a meeting where we review our goals, strategy and resources at our disposal. Then understand together what each team member require to do better. Such meeting was held while I was a PhD student while we noticed mental health issue is affecting PhD students' performance. It helped us to understand various reasons why performance have dropped and recommendations were tailored to each case.

In my experience, understanding the root cause of the performance issues through honest and empathetic conversations is very important. Ultimately, demonstrating genuine care for team members and actively working together to address challenges can help uplift the team’s performance and foster a sense of unity and shared purpose. Support should also be demonstrated by providing adequate resources for executing tasks!

Ensuring that the team understands clients, why they work with us, and how we can deepen relationships with them, is critical in a services environment. I joined a team this year providing association services for higher education. My core focus was to ensure that colleagues understood how companies sponsoring or considering sponsorship fit in our ecosystem. Tech companies can't just be approached as technology providers, but rather for who they are: the technology outsourcing provider for smaller institutions; software provider for AI that minimizes development officer downtime; or SMS solutions maximizing student engagement and retention. Knowing who the company is makes it possible to connect the company to the right association members.

It’s important to create a collaborative learning environment.It will help team members trust each other more, up skill themselves with ample support and connect.Also, understanding academic processes becomes easier when they’re mentored well.

En effet, le travail d'équipe participe à l'amélioration des performances graces à la mise en commun des connaissances et des compétences de chaque membre de l'équipe. When we challenge ourselves, our teams, and our leaders to consider other approaches we all benefit from the perspectives brought to the table. Just as institutional knowledge proves invaluable to an organization, learning from others can elevate stagnant systems. The real challenge is striking a balance to attract fresh perspective in human capital and rewarding institutional longevity.

In my opinion, If a team's performance in higher education is lagging, it's essential to identify the root cause through open communication and collaboration. Encourage team members to voice their concerns and suggestions for improvement. Implement targeted interventions such as additional support resources, personalized coaching, or team-building activities to address weaknesses and enhance cohesion. Regularly monitor progress and provide constructive feedback to keep the team motivated and focused on achieving its goals. All in all, Flexibility, adaptability, and a supportive environment are key to revitalizing team performance in higher education.

In my experience, it is best to reward behavior and skills that you desire rather than punish or be punitive with what is not acceptable. It is often said that “you can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar. “

Awards and recognition should be authentic and specific. A leader should not wait until an annual or quarterly awards ceremony to give praise for a job well done. As a leader I say thank you a lot, but that thank you is followed by the reason for my gratitude. It is my experience that a hundred specific appreciations is better than a generic acknowledgment accompanied by a meaningless piece of hardware. The latter will not overcome the feeling of being unappreciated the preceding 364 days.

In boosting team performance in higher education, shift towards upward recognition when direct rewards aren't feasible. Actively praise team members and champion their contributions. If they've played a part in creating presentations or materials for executive meetings, ensure their efforts are visibly credited. Encourage including their names on their work and, when possible, invite them to present their sections. This not only acknowledges their hard work but also empowers them and underscores the value of their contributions at higher levels of the organization.

This should be at the top of the list. Start with the end in mind( goals targets, benchmarks) and use data to evaluate progress.

Siempre es importante monitorear el avance hacia las metas. A mí me ha funcionado el tener reuniones periódicas (muy breves) para monitorear el avance de un gran proyecto. Esto mantiene a todos en la misma página y entrega también la sensación de progreso y permite identificar rápidamente elementos de atención urgente o anticiparnos a las falencias. Dar votos de confianza y establecer metas junto con el equipo los empodera para llevar adelante sus tareas de forma autónoma y sin controles excesivos. Crear autonomía es importante.

Start by conducting an in-depth analysis to pinpoint specific areas where performance is lagging. Use metrics such as student retention rates, graduation rates, employment after graduation, student satisfaction scores, and research output amongst others. Clarity of the problem at hand is key. Based on the assessment, set clear, achievable objectives that address the deficiencies. These should include academic objectives, as well as operational, financial, and cultural goals.

I would start by providing support to the team, leading by example, demonstrating comfort with the unknown, maintaining a positive attitude and understanding individual and collective struggles. Recognition of hard work and contribution can significantly boost morale and motivation, encouraging continued effort and improvement. This requires frequent, open and honest communication to unearth what the underlying issues are. Just as important is the utilization of data and feedback to reassess and adjustment goals to ensure they align with both institutional objectives and team capabilities. Project goals can then be broken down into smaller, achievable milestones which helps boost the team’s confidence and credibility within the organization

Developing a successful team requires 3 salient tools: a. Staffing Plan b. Professional Development Plan c. Strategic Plan These 3 plans inform how a leader engages his/her team. Moreover, at the core, is understanding your team both individually and interdependently. Contextually, this allows for an authentic level of engagement that establishes or ought to develop trust, respect, and a commitment to accountability. Additionally, through an authentic lens, stratification of assignments/projects can be done in a way that yields a strategic organizational alignment critical to success; even more critically, positioning team members to thrive, which goes beyond temporal success. Essential to this construct is communication .

I have found that utilizing assessment tools developed by external partners has been valuable. A 360-evaluation on the team members provides insights into where members are crushing it and where they could use support to further develop. Assessing the views of students through national surveys can provide benchmarking and goal development. I recall an instance when we needed to improve tuition collection. The bursar insisted bills were sent out in a timely manner so it must be the fault of the students, and they should not be able to register for classes. Students said the means of delivery of the bill was not getting their attention. A simple anecdote, possibly reflective of other practices. We need extra eyes.

Before you begin, check yourself as a supervisor. Unless your team is very small, it is rare for an entire team to underperform - be sure you are viewing each member individually and not lumping them together. Then, determine under what definition/expectation your team is lagging. Take time to investigate from where the concern is coming, as some possibilities include: team members not meeting job expectations; team members are performing well but not keeping up with goals identified in the past performance evaluation; staff are meeting your expectations but senior leadership are expecting more; institutional, divisional, or departmental goals have changed but your team is still operating under previous goals.
