Your team is underperforming. How can you motivate them to improve?

No human wants to under perform Which means there has to be something which is making him/her under perform. Identifying these issues impacting the performance is very important. The challenges here is one cannot be only professional nor can be emotional. Balancing these both while finding root causes is must for faster improvements. Analyse factors which are beyond the control and if these impacting performance, one should revise targets and KPI, targets with a stretch are most motivating hence changing goal post is not bad. This is also a continuous process and cannot be calenderised as the outcome depends a lot on relationship

To motivate an underperforming team, we need to find out the root cause. It could be because of team overstretching, unrealistic deadlines, changing scopes, stakeholder's expectations and many more. We also need to talk to individuals and understand if anyone undergoing personal hardship and try to address. Once we identify and address these, we need to set SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound) goals to the team and measure them at frequent intervals to track the progress.

To motivate an underperforming team, I would first identify the root causes of the issue. Once I have a clear understanding, I would communicate openly with the team, setting clear and achievable goals. I would provide regular feedback and recognition for progress, creating a supportive environment where team members feel valued and encouraged to improve. Regular team meetings and check-ins would help maintain motivation and track progress towards goals.

There are multiple factors that contribute to a team not performing up to the mark and to come out of this situation it is very important that we identify the root cause but the important question is...How to root cause? I always follow the approach of sorting things over a cup of coffee.. sometime all that a team needs is someone whom they can speak to, someone who can be a friend before a colleague. If that trust is established it will be very easy to solve any scenario!

I think this is a helpful way for our team they will work harder giving them recognition and rewards is a simple way that we treasure them. For me a loyal employee is a way of having a loyal customers.

It starts and ends with leadership...not management. All of the aforementioned basic required steps such as root cause analysis, SMART goals, etc., are "ya just gotta do it" steps as part of the process to move the ball down the field, period. However, the uncomfortable truth of any potential gaps beyond the traditional KPI driven metrics may fall squarely on the shoulders of leadership. There will always be an element of how effective leadership can either add to or take away from the performance goals and the associated outcome and productivity of the overall team.
