Everyone wants to do the exciting new project, no one wants to stay and clean up afterwards! Some people like it. I do because I like sh#t done right! Find these people in your team to be the champions. Play on the teams sense of satisfaction of finishing the job and embarrassment at having an incomplete product. Normalise boring work as part of routine and team culture. Emphasis the 80/20. Most of life/job/projects is boring. Once you accept that, it stops being a chore and just becomes part of the job.

To keep morale high while addressing technical debt, focus on small wins: celebrate each milestone to highlight progress. Clearly communicate the "why" behind this effort—faster development, better code quality —so the team sees the long-term impact. Allocate time for innovation, allowing team members to work on fresh ideas. Share before-and-after examples to show the tangible benefits, and involve the team in planning to build ownership. Provide learning opportunities, turning technical debt work into skill-building experiences. Lastly, maintain a clear roadmap with achievable phases, making progress visible and reinforcing the goal of a healthier codebase.

Keeping a team motivated during technical debt reduction calls for a blend of clear milestones, open support, and a refresh-focused work environment. First, reframe technical debt as “system upgrades”—a mindset shift that allows each fix to feel like a future-oriented enhancement rather than mere cleanup. Celebrate these as “core upgrades” to inspire a sense of forward progress. Next, establish debt “check-ins” where team members discuss both technical roadblocks and their impact; this builds solidarity, making each challenge feel manageable. Finally, initiate weekly “mindset resets” with informal, tech-free breaks to reduce burnout—this rhythm reenergizes the team, making sustained progress enjoyable.
