This goes back to what I mentioned earlier about approaching problems objectively -- over-reliance on previously proven mental models inevitably becomes a crutch which slows down innovation. One of the best ways to foster innovation is to establish unrealistic limits on the solutions (i.e. we only have X budget to utilize, we have to solve in 1 week rather than 1 month, etc.). Constraints foster out-of-the-box thinking out of necessity, and teach the team to think not in terms of "right" or "wrong" choices, but as a spectrum of "effective" or "ineffective" solutions.

When exploring assumptions and new directions for innovation it is important to GET OUT OF THE BUILDING! Too many innovation teams are rooted to their offices, conference rooms of WFH desk. These spaces don't provide fresh perspective or new insights. Go mystery shopping, talk to customers, sit in a cafe, visit a zoo, do a tradeshow – these things get you outside your current mental blocks and ways of thinking and help you to return with a fresh perspective and new inspiration to explore! Get outside!

The easiest way to reduce the friction toward constant learning is to separate the ideas from the people -- and fostering a culture of constant feedback (both good and bad). Keep communication channels polished and wide open.

Sometimes it helps to create and apply incentives with discipline. When people know that actions like being unproductive will have consequences, they might do better. However, this approach will only work where people need to be incentivised. Sometimes it's the whole system or work environment that needs to change. Under such circumstances, no amount of incentives will work.

Collaboration is most productive when teams stay within their zone of genius, but it can't be too siloed (there's a balance). To make the most of collaborative efforts, I can't stress enough the importance of CLEARLY stated goals that are mutually agreed-upon. Most issues come down to disparate goals, so don't go in assuming that both teams are incentivized toward the same end -- this needs to be done intentionally and upfront.

In my experience, there are several things that need to be aligned to spark Innovation; one of them is the environment the team is working in. Some might dare to call this the culture of the team. Does your environment and culture encourage innovation? I once had a benchmark visit and learned a key lesson about how the company fostered an innovation culture; “The best idea wins!” They said. It’s not about the Hippos or Highly paid persons’ opinions, anybody can contribute and if what they’re suggesting solves the problem then that’s the idea they’ll implement. This does two things for the team: 1. Encourages them to think widely and wildly or ideate. 2. It promotes a culture of collaboration. There’s no innovation without collaboration.

At the start of any initiative, ensure the entire team has a profound understanding of how their work will impact the lives of customers, as well as its impact on the company. Share any constraints as well. A skilled team that is attuned to the impact of their work seldom succumbs to stagnation. The challenge will instead morph into choosing from a wealth of ideas. This good problem can be solved using the same impact-based approach. Then, all you have to do is be the catalyst and a steadfast supporter who clears any obstacles on your team's path to success.

A true vision eliminates the "ruts" we typically fall into. When people perceive their future as a brighter place, they naturally move with motivation. It's a PULL, not a PUSH. If you have a team that is lackluster or in a rut, or underperforming, there's a good chance you need to re-establish a shared vision of what is being built and building it well will directly benefit the parties involved.
