Your team is struggling with communication issues. How can you address them to improve teamwork?

Your team isn't communicating because they're not paddling in the same direction. Yes, it's an old adage, but it's true. Imagine if you're the only person on a boat rowing left, while everyone else rows right. That's how your team feels. So, get everyone together and first, get everyone on the same page. Why are we here? What are our goals? What is our common vision? Make sure you have alignment. Then, communicate more. Make it easy for your team to talk to one another. Use Slack, WhatsApp, Trello, Basecamp. Whatever it is, make sure you're able to share insights, blockers, challenges, and wins with the whole team. Remember, communication is not just talking, it's also listening, so acknowledge people's input and feedback.

One of my previous manager imparted a crucial lesson on completing the communication cycle: whenever assigned a task, it's essential to keep stakeholders informed until its conclusion or when it becomes evident that completion isn't feasible. This principle significantly contributed to my career advancement. I aim to convey its benefits to the team, fostering a culture where every team member naturally completes the communication loop as an integral part of their professional conduct.

As per my understanding communication issues in the team can occur due to following points with remediation 1. Nature of Associate - If someone is tongue tied then in such circumstance time only prepares for the next.Ex Navjot Sidhu,some miracles :) This is tough scenario. 2.Lack of knowledge - There are many who are good speakers and if they dont have subject knowledge then ppl prefer to keep quiet, 3.Improper Org Structure - Here ppl struggle whom to communicate when needed 4.No Recognition - Unsung heroes prefer to be quiet

Effective communication in the workplace can be tricky. A variety of issues come into play on all sides including tone of voice, faulty listening, missing information, assumptions of previous knowledge, and unclear explanations. Create a set of standards, company communicates both internally and externally. This will build a solid foundation on which future communication efforts can be built.

In order to identify the burning or hidden issues you must first create a setting in which your team feel safe to express themselves in a non-judgmental environment (for the long term - you should aim for it to be a cultural thing). Kicking off with associations game or anonymous feedback forms can help spark and raise to awareness lots of thought and feelings. Moreover, I believe in letting the team offer solutions as a restoring trust and bonding move. Communication is in our essence, so sometimes just by setting up the stage, rather then addressing the issues ourselves can lead to a much more fundamental behavioral change in your team communication.

Utilise Metrics as a tool for driving the right expectations and clarity. Quantitative data can be helpful: This will help set clear expectations for recognizing individuals who consistently exceed sales targets or complete tasks efficiently. Consider qualitative contributions: Things like leadership, mentorship, or fostering a positive team environment.

Ensure that there are well-defined channels for communication within the team. Use tools and platforms that facilitate easy and transparent communication, and establish guidelines for their use. Regularly scheduled meetings, both formal and informal, can help keep everyone on the same page. Example of an Activity you could do is a "Weekly Team Sync" : Hold a weekly team meeting where everyone can share updates, ask questions, and discuss any challenges they are facing. This helps ensure that all team members are aware of ongoing projects and can address any miscommunications promptly.

Setting expectations and daily, weekly checks to assure they are on the set path for success. Praising the job well done on goals being met and suggestions on how to maintain.

Most of communication issues, in my experiences, come from the opposition of point of view without understanding each other. As team manager, when I hear a problem between 2 "sides", i always have a first separate approach with each of the teamates involved. Once i understand the point of view of everyone, i can meet them, still separtly and ask " why do you think X or Y acted / said / raected this way? Could it be possible he did this because * reason gave by the other part*, and was not thinking you would be offended?" Admitting each other’s point of view is crucial in these situation. If both agree on the idea that the point was not to attack each other, I organize a meeting and every time i proceeded this way, it solved the issue.

Because every team member contributes a different viewpoint, I think diverse teams function better. This diversity encourages discussion, questions the existing quo, and eventually produces more thorough and well-thought-out results. Inclusive leaders actively put together different teams in effective collaborations, utilizing a range of viewpoints to facilitate quicker decision-making and produce better outcomes.

You could conduct regular workshops or training sessions focused on effective communication skills. These can include activities like role-playing scenarios to practice active listening and clear articulation of ideas. Also, Know Your Role: According to Stoicism, understanding and embracing your role within the team is essential. By knowing your responsibilities and how they contribute to the larger goal, you can communicate more effectively and work more harmoniously with others. By focusing on these key areas, you can improve communication within your team and foster a more collaborative and productive work environment.

When it comes to inclusion, every person bring his or her luggage and perspectives, so it's an essential act to first ask what is inclusion in their eyes. If we don't know how people are perceiving inclusiveness we won't be able to be inclusive. It's my belief that when people hear from first hand about a perspective it will be easier for them to be in awareness to respect it.

I’ve found that quiet teammates often do not feel comfortable in group settings, so before group meetings/coaching I’ll have my teammates send over topics they’d like to address, it often leads to feedback from many and they silent teammate is now engaged as well.

I've had experiences where a team of technically efficient individuals were performing poorly, in this case the problem was with their soft skills. Enhancing soft skills in a team struggling with communication issues can significantly improve teamwork by fostering better understanding and cooperation. Key soft skills such as active listening, empathy, and constructive feedback help team members express themselves more clearly and understand each other's viewpoints. Improved communication builds trust, reduces conflicts, and enhances collaboration, leading to a more cohesive and productive team environment.

I always promote cross up-skilling the members of my team, whilst also ensuring they have the basic skills required as well. I will always understand where the strengths are as well as their weaknesses and do everything I can to help them. I will also help understand their future aspirations and encourage them to learn new skills and bring any training they are interested to me, to see if it’s possible to give them, while looking at the benefits to the individual, but also the team and the business.

Gratitude and spontaneous gratitude is one of the most uplifting gifts we can give to ourselves and to our employees in order to celebrate successes. It can be a shoutout in the team whatapp/slack chat or even just a surprising letter left on the screen with a sticky note. But, if you want to take it to the next level - make your appreciation for success public by posting about it in social media while including the team members that we're involved. People love to be part of big moves, it's giving them a sense of belonging, confidence boost and harnessing them towards the next and bigger success.

Acknowledge the importance of behind-the-scenes work, data analysis, creative brainstorming, and meticulous review processes. To take it a step further by empowering team members to recognize each other's contributions. This can be achieved by creating platforms like recognition channels or shout-out boards for public praise from colleagues.

I’ve found by celebrating success of people in your team and organisation it always helps to improve morale and shows you value their contributions. This in turn means they will go the extra mile and are less likely to leave the business, as they are valued. Just little things like allowing them to finish an hour early or even a simple thank you, to show your appreciation of them will go a long way.

One thing I’ve found helpful is giving praises for a job well done and providing feedback as to why the outcome was so successful.

One of the ways I use to improve interpersonal communications with my clients is using a tool called motivational maps. This tool along with raised awareness of communication skills, through short development sessions, has had huge impact with my clients. Motivational maps help team members and their leaders better understand their own and each others 'fundamental drivers'. This increases empathy because of the learning arpudn each others needs and wants from the workplace.
