Your team is struggling with Agile Methodologies. How can you empower them to succeed?

The daily scrum works like magic to get all members on the same page. It is a short, focused meeting that helps a team stay aligned and on track with their project goals.

To empower your team with agile, first understand the reason behind their struggle—whether it's unclear processes, lack of training, or resistance to change. Address these issues by providing targeted training, fostering collaboration, encouraging continuous feedback, removing roadblocks, and giving them autonomy to make decisions. Regularly review progress in retrospectives and adapt based on their needs.

To adapt Agile, you need a shift in mindset just like everything else that starts new or needs modification to what is currently happening. If team can start adapting to the new way of working it will be much easier. But again a word of caution, its more easier said than Done. So keep training, practicing and adapting.

Here are some of the things I’ve done: Engage the team, find out what works for them and what doesn’t. Tackle one problem at a time and accept there is no such thing as perfect. Consistent feedback loop to gather feedback in implemented changes, again asking what works and what doesn’t and tweak accordingly. Always keep it simple and avoid being dogmatic. Pragmatism over dogmatism always.

Effective team dynamics are at the heart of Agile success. Imagine a project where the Product Owner’s vision and the team’s execution didn’t align—leading to frustration and delays. As an Agile Coach, I’ve seen how clarity in roles and open communication can transform a team. When a team I worked with faced similar issues, we reset by aligning roles and fostering an environment where everyone’s voice mattered. The change was incredible: productivity soared, and the team felt more cohesive and motivated. Remember, when team dynamics flow, so does success!

Focus on improving collaboration and trust within the team. Agile success depends on high levels of communication and self-organization. Facilitate team-building activities and encourage open dialogue so team members feel comfortable discussing challenges and proposing solutions. When the team trusts one another, they become more effective.

The topmost priority of a team leader, irrespective of the methodology adopted, is to understand the team dynamics. One has to understand the level of maturity in the team and how the team members collaborate with each other. You need to be present to guide them but ensure there is no micromanagement happening. Build a sense of accountability and ownership by empowering the team to make collective decisions. Agile as we know is flexible. You can adopt any framework that suits your team best - kanban, scrum, scrumban etc. Coach the team of the principles of Agile and the chosen framework. Finally, empowering any team is actually a mix of coaching, supporting and continuously adapting that helps the team reach maturity.

Emphasize the importance of delivering value incrementally. Help the team break down tasks into smaller, manageable pieces. By celebrating small wins and progress made during each sprint, the team will gain confidence and realize the power of iterative improvement.

Divide work for delivery ("What can we do together today, that moves the product toward better market fit?") and not for assignment ("How can we get this big job split into individual tickets for solo programmers?")

Incremental to progress step by step till reaching the goal. Help build small pieces and focus on the quality of the delivery. Iterative to test regularly and have regular feedbacks, ending in having a product that is enhanced every cycle and that fits to the need.

Providing feedback specially negative without lossing enthusiasm and hardworking from the employee itself is high priority and in the same time is challenging. So the leader or scrum master must be so smart to handle this situation so it needs a great effort .

If we can empower the ownership at each level across the team and at individual levels then all the risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies are handled better and in a very agile fashion. When the team own their work they work with more dedication and holistically, carrying a better contextual understanding and deliver a defect free product. This practice minimises delay in deliveries as well. This becomes evident when Development teams start also wearing business hat and business start thinking from technical point of view too.

We need to know the mission, and we need to decide on doing work that progresses the mission. "Build this because I designed it" is nonsense. Teams that are assigned all their work don't have ownership. They are laborers and not team members; they are just hands for someone else's brain. Teams decide. Autonomy (in how to achieve the mission) is a part of 'agile' that is too often ignored in the rush to make it a "software factory."

Encourage team members to take full responsibility for their work and outcomes. Give them the autonomy to make decisions within the scope of their roles, while providing guidance as needed. When people feel they have control over their work, they are more motivated to succeed.
