As sad as it is strategic and critical thinking is not a skill or endowment everyone has Some people don’t just have it So you must show it to them instead of telling them Let them see for themselves how their daily tasks contribute to achieving their long term goals

Who is asking this question? What team member do I have that’s saying “pretty sure I don’t want to think strategically.” The answer is to fire that team member. They should have never made it to the table. OR another possibility is that LinkedIn is spewing increasingly more garbage onto my feed.

Getting team members on board with the value of strategic thinking starts with fostering a culture of curiosity and open dialogue and in my experience, I always emphasize how strategic thinking is not just for leadership—it benefits everyone. I create opportunities for the team to engage in real-life case studies, problem-solving sessions, and brainstorms to see the impact of thinking beyond the immediate while by showing how strategic thinking directly influences success, I encourage ownership and long-term vision across the team.

Stop telling them why strategic thinking is important—show them what it solves. Abstract concepts rarely stick. Show them a real-time failure that strategic foresight could have prevented—think Blockbuster dismissing Netflix as a fad. When people see the cost of reactive thinking, they’ll be more open to understanding the value of looking ahead.
