In those rare instances where calm and offline doesn’t apply, I think in most cases a calm online discussion can suffice. Asking questions of the individual and being prepared to answer those responses has worked for me in the past. Obviously in emergent situations there may not be time for that in which case I think calm, direct, and very concise works. Followed by a strong offline conversation after. The key is to build the positive relationships prior to avoid that, but in my experience that’s not possible with everyone.

Praise in public, criticize in private. Respond calmly in the moment. Tell the individual that you and they can address their concern offline, and get the meeting back on track. Follow up, as soon as you can do so calmly, directly with the individual and work through the issue. Sometimes this discussion will require very direct conversation, but it is far better to do that offline than in front of a group.

"Stand Tall—Confidence is Your Best Ally!" When a team member questions your authority in a meeting, it’s crucial to respond with composure and clarity. Acknowledge their concern and invite open dialogue, but reinforce your position by grounding your responses in facts and shared goals. Demonstrate your expertise by providing context and showing how your decisions benefit the team and project. Remember, assertiveness doesn’t mean being confrontational; it’s about showing confidence while fostering collaboration. By addressing the situation with respect and authority, you not only assert your leadership but also strengthen the team’s trust in your guidance!

When a team member questions my authority, I stay calm and focused on the bigger picture. First, I acknowledge their perspective, showing that I value their input. Then, I take the opportunity to clarify my position and explain the reasoning behind key decisions. By leading through example, I aim to demonstrate confidence and a clear vision. Instead of asserting power directly, I remind the team of our shared goals and encourage constructive dialogue. This way, I assert my leadership while fostering a respectful and collaborative environment.
