Your team member is missing deadlines consistently. How can you address this productivity issue effectively?
When a team member consistently misses deadlines, it's crucial to address the issue constructively. To navigate this challenge:
- Open a dialogue. Have a private conversation to understand any underlying issues and express the impact on the team.
- Set clear expectations and consequences. Ensure they know what is required and the ramifications of not meeting deadlines.
- Offer support and resources. Sometimes additional training or time management tools can turn things around.
Have you successfully navigated similar situations? What strategies worked for you?

Addressing missed deadlines requires a constructive approach of support. Open a Conversation: I start by discussing the missed deadlines in private, understanding any challenges they are facing. Set Clear Expectations: We set clear, realistic deadlines and priorities of tasks together so they clearly understand what is most important. Offer Support and Resources: If they need certain tools or training to help improve their time management skills, I provide them access to these tools. Check in regularly: This helps in keeping them on the right track through short, regular check-ins, and the frequent interactions tend to provide chances for adjustment if necessary. This approach helps them improve while keeping the team's goals on track.

The welfare and well-being of the team member is the priority. Once it is established that the team member is not in a crisis, I would immediately offer my support, expertise and resources. The priority is to make sure that the team member feels supported and confident. Seeking additional support and resources from other team members maybe required to get the team member across the finish line.

If my team member is not capable of achieving basic outcomes then that person will not be on a team with me. Either the leader sacks that person or I resign. An eco system like that is not worth being part of. Your reputation may be hurt by working in a place like this.

When a team member is constantly missing deadlines it is important to "seek first to understand" prior to any corrective action. I was coaching a general manager of an organisation and they were magnificent at setting tasks and deadlines, but apprehensive at addressing tasks not being completed on time and often not being completed at all. This lack of managerial follow up has the impact on the team that was, "if it doesn't matter to you, why should it matter to me". If this is the case, look in the mirror, set the deadlines and keep the team accountable. Give them impact and consequences. Hold yourself accountable to hold the team to account. Watch how quickly things turn around!

Join them on the next project. Leaders lead from the front lines, not the back. Do not act as a crutch, and discipline when necessary, but if you haven’t been in the trenches with them before those steps are taken then you are acting prematurely. This is all too often the case that work is delegated, things are missed/late; and proper training wasn’t received to put this person in a position to succeed. Some people are afraid to ask for help or might just need a nudge in the right direction to move their efficiency/productivity needle. A good leader will show them how to effectively manage time and give them tangible steps to become independent. If that fails, then (and only then) are you taking formal corrective measures.
