When one team member feels overshadowed, it’s crucial to let them know their voice matters just as much as anyone else's. The first step is to listen—really listen—to what they bring to the table. Then, help them identify their unique strengths and the value they contribute that others may not see. Create opportunities for them to share ideas in a way that feels comfortable for them, whether that's in smaller groups or one-on-one sessions. By validating their perspective and giving them a platform, you empower them to stand out. Everyone deserves their moment in the spotlight; it’s your job to help them find it. After all, the best ideas come when we all feel heard.

Interesting scenario, given that usually there is a lot of work to be done and few arms to take it. As a leader, I must ensure that roles and responsibilities are clear, and that everybody understands its place and possibilities. Delegation Poker and Competence Matrix could help, but is crucial to understand the “overshadowed” person expectations and the role of the other person in the team. Maybe it is just a matter of organizing the steps and proper moments to contribute.

Here are some simple steps that I follow: 1/ Acknowledge their contributions in team discussions to reinforce their value and ensure their ideas aren’t overlooked. 2/ Create space for their voice by directly inviting their input in meetings- “[Name], what’s your perspective on this?” 3/ Give them ownership of projects or key tasks where they can take the lead and showcase their strengths. A little recognition and the right opportunities can make all the difference!
