1. Ask open ended questions and show genuine interest about their work. 2. To empathize , we must listen to them actively. 3. And yes, creating a safe environment by being a bit vulnerable will also help people opening up. 4. Apart from these, if you sense lack of skills ( language/ technical/ interpersonal), you can suggest relative trainings to improve.
