Everyone want to be incharge of their self & contribute in growth Before we start looking for solution it is important to realise why does the team lack motivation or don’t want to take ownership To find out engage in informal talks & to understand the reasons.Ask open ended questions & also allow them to ask question. These question need to be phased carefully one should not take this as criticism for ex. don’t ask “Why you don’t take ownership” Some reason could be People fear if they fail there will be consequences Lack of autonomy & micromanagement Public humiliation in case of failure Have flexibility People should know mistake are learning for future not for punishment Once you know why you can’t address the concern to motivated

If your team lacks motivation and ownership, the key to inspiring them starts with giving them more control. Start by involving them in decision-making—when people feel their voice matters, they naturally take more ownership of their tasks. Show them how their work contributes to the bigger picture and the overall success of the organization. Acknowledge their strengths and offer regular, constructive feedback that helps them grow (emphasis on CONSTRUCTIVE). Finally, create a culture where taking initiative is encouraged, making it clear that you trust them to lead their own projects and excel at what they do best.

It′s best to look into the mirror first. It′s usually a leadership issue because motivation does not simply vanish. If people aren’t taking charge of their work, it’s because they haven’t been given a real reason to care. Cookie-cutter solutions like “setting clear goals” or “celebrating achievements” are not enough. These are just surface-level fixes. You need to actively create an environment where ownership is expected. Hold people accountable, give them real responsibility, and state that results are expected. At the same time you need to set the tone for a culture of psychological safety - specifically for robust discussions. Anything less is just hand-holding. If your team still doesn’t step up? You may have the wrong people.

To inspire my team to take charge of their work, I start by clearly defining roles and expectations, ensuring everyone understands their responsibilities. I encourage autonomy by allowing team members to make decisions related to their tasks, fostering a sense of ownership. Regular check-ins provide opportunities for feedback and open dialogue, which helps address concerns and keeps everyone engaged. I also recognize and celebrate individual and team achievements to boost morale. By creating a supportive environment and emphasizing the importance of their contributions, I motivate the team to embrace ownership and be proactive in their work.
