Your team lacks direction in their professional growth. How can you empower them to take ownership and excel?

As an effective executive leader, you must FIRST get to know each team member on their aspirations, sense of purpose, & whether they are in the right roles. No empowerment will help them figure out what makes them tick & what their Ikigai is. Know your team! Talk to each of them to find out what they look for in the company & where they could contribute most. Identify their strengths & areas for improvement. Put the right talent in the right roles. Each will then complement the other to deliver as one team. Let them feel that you sincerely care about their career growth & future in the company. Happy teams deliver beyond what they are capable of. Then give them the required empowerment to make decisions & execute. They will give their all!

Sustained leaders take responsibility for their own development. They conduct regular self-assessments (with mentor help), engage in constant learning, & set goals to improve. Such honesty can be harsh. When you turn over rocks, be prepared to deal with whatever is under them! As the team leader one of your many responsibilities is to develop other leaders. How do you motivate the unmotivated to proactively act to help themselves? Leadership is more than being effective and productive in a business setting. Your character, competence, compassion, communication, and commitment are LIFE skills working together to make you the best possible version of yourself. A focus on life improvement often motivates those who are not yet self-motivated.

Goal's are great. As Covey has noted, we should begin with the end in mind. Self-will, however is not real. Unless persuaded in some way, very few of us will take the necessary steps to achieve goals. Scott Adams (Dilbert creator) has noted that the better approach is to create systems - methods & processes that guide you into habits & routines that create the result sought from setting the goal. Think more wholistically about your settings, your weak points, your motivations. Remove distractions, temptations, & excuses. Change your environment or even the people with whom you associate. If you are truly serious about achieving a goal rather than abandoning a New Year's resolution before Groundhog day, consider putting systems in place.

To achieve this goal joining continuing education schools or attending an online courses can be one way of solving this issue. Also attending free online courses such as LinkedIn courses can help to sharpen one’s knowledge and skills. The team lead should show examples so that other team members follow suit. Discussing career growth opportunities in the team meetings and especially in one-on-one sessions can be very helpful.

There are so many opportunities for continuous learning that you can support as a manager. Book Clubs, Lunch n Learns, formal training, simply inviting other departments to come share their perspectives/. Make continuous learning a part of your employee development program by measuring it and rewarding it, showing your team that it is important to the business.
