I’ve seen my fair share of budding leaders who appeared lost in their first months. This is why it is best to promote people who already have credibility with the team, because it is much easier to manage the transition. Here’s what I tell them to do to earn respect: First, they need to lead by example. Nothing earns respect faster than rolling up your sleeves and getting the job done. Show them. Second, encourage them to actually listen to the team, like truly listen, not just the head-nodding kind. Third, build relationships in an informal setting. Do it one person at a time. Before they know it, they have rapport with most of the team. This is not easy, but worth doing well.

Focus on building their credibility and trust. 1) Encourage them to demonstrate competence by taking initiative, solving problems effectively, and seeking feedback. 2) Lead by example by showing commitment, integrity, and a willingness to learn. 3) Promote transparency and open communication by sharing information and being approachable. 4) Empower the team by delegating tasks, recognizing achievements, and fostering collaboration. This approach will build confidence in their abilities and foster respect from their peers.

New leaders often feel like they need to have all the answers to gain respect, but real credibility comes from leading with vulnerability. Leaders gain respect from being authentic and acknowledging what they don't know. Encourage them to be transparent with the team about areas where they're still learning, and then invite the team to help them learn through collaboration. When a leader has a learner's mindset and shows that they're open to input and growth, it builds a foundation of trust and respect. Folks are more likely to rally behind someone who is real, not someone who's just pretending to have it all together and project confidence.
