I watched a veteran machine operator refuse to let a new teammate start their shift without double-checking their safety harness. It wasn't because of rules or protocols - he simply said, "I promised your kids I'd send you home safe when they visited last month." That moment crystallized something I've been thinking about: We've been getting safety training all wrong. We keep throwing statistics and regulations at people, hoping they'll stick. But here's the truth - nobody was ever inspired to change by a pie chart. The real magic happens when safety becomes personal. When that machine operator made that simple promise to his coworker's kids, he wasn't following a procedure - he was being human.

To boost engagement in safety training, consider introducing scenario-based learning. This approach uses realistic, interactive scenarios that simulate potential hazards, allowing team members to practise their responses in a controlled environment. It’s valuable because it makes training practical and relevant, helping employees see the direct impact of safety protocols on their daily roles. In workplace safety, scenario-based learning shifts training from passive instruction to active problem-solving, making it more engaging and memorable. By connecting safety training to real-life situations, you foster a deeper understanding and appreciation, motivating the team to take safety practices seriously.

Let's start with ourselves first as leaders of the teams. We must reach a mature level in emotional intelligence and personality types to be able to assess the team and clarify our approach to their needs and the way ahead. For example we found that younger generation are more comfortable with technology and it's easier to use for them, therefore we introduced a VR HSE trainings. But that was not suitable for the more "classic" employees, where we had to give the trainings in interactive ways. The slides will have minimum wordings which will give opportunity for open discussions (experience, lessons learned, thoughts). Depending on the employees types (interactive, closed, shy and etc) the training delivery method will change as well.

To increase motivation for safety training, share real-life examples and facts on its impact. Highlight both personal and communal benefits, such as risk reduction and improved well-being. Make training more interesting by introducing interactive features, gamification, and real-world events. Recognise and praise involvement to help create a healthy learning atmosphere. Encourage leadership to fully participate and lead by example. Address any issues or misconceptions honestly to ensure openness. Create a fascinating, relevant, and gratifying training experience to increase engagement and commitment.
