To calm things down I would ask if I could summarise both (or multiple) viewpoints. While calmly doing so, I would also mention the arguments made by opposants of each viewpoint. It not only clarifies the discussion, it also shows everyone that they've been heard and understood. Thereafter I would ask which of each valid argument weighs the most... If that doesn't help, I would start proposing not to choose between two options, but maybe for both, or even choose to brainstorm for a third...
