Kaizen is at the forefront of continuous improvement. However its the cultural identity of manufacturing that needs to be recalibrated. Manufacturer's are engrained with change = bad, because product reliability and conformance starts with following and sticking to the process... If you want to improve and learn how to be more efficient, and faster to adopt change as a company, than you need to break this mold by asking the question, "Why can't it be done a better way"? Ex: Machining process takes too long, the finishing process is inconsistent from person to person, Work order release takes too many resources. Establish a team, find the high leverage opportunities, enable the team to be successful, and blitz the problems.

I think this is the second part, before kaizen is hansei, and that means having a clear understanding of whats wrong and why it need to be improved. Lean is a culture, but missing production is more about the failures of a system (either materials, or line balancing, or machines failure, etc) . As the leader the more important role is to help the team TO THINK About all these variables, the best way it thru good quality questions.

Minor victories have to be recognized and celebrated, but in my experience, showing the accumulation of the team has an even greater impact. It is a good strategy to show the big picture and then break it down into areas and show the importance of the individual. When every person in the team understands that they are accountable for the team goal, they are motivated and committed to achieving it.
