Your team is divided on strategic goals. How can you align everyone towards a common vision?

I would ask each person to share their goals, ask other members to listen and then ask questions before moving to the next person with different goals to go through the same present/question process. I've found that once this process happens, people are more likely to move their positions or everyone comes to a middle ground.

It depends on the size of the organization and where you lead from. If leading within a large company you may have been handed strategic goals. If leading within a small company you may have been instrumental in developing the goals. Regardless of the company size, socializing and a clear communication plan is critical to buy in and adoption. This helps mitigate misalignment. However, misunderstanding, differing definitions, and disagreements can still occur. These can be cleared up through a variety of means: one-on-ones, leader stand ups, team meetings, and other feedback channels. Bottom line, making sure you have a healthy, empathetic, diverse, and communicative team is the best way to make sure you align and commit on strategic goals.

To address this, the first step is to ensure transparency and foster clear communication. Start by defining and articulating the destination. Next, outline the benefits of reaching it to highlight its value. Then, create a roadmap that visualizes the path to achieving the vision. This should include specific tasks and milestones, detailing the expected results as each is completed. One way to align teams with this approach is to use OKRs. The 'O' stands for the Objective, which represents the destination, while the 'KRs' denote the Key Results, which are specific, measurable outcomes that indicate progress. This promotes clarity because everyone sees each other's OKRs, illustrating how individual efforts contribute to the vision.

Further prioritize, rebalance the portfolio, adjust speed to the organization’s stage. Is it a startup, scale-up, turnaround, realign, or sustain success, using Michael D. Watkins framework? Organizations can’t take more than 3-5 things at a time, so be clear what is number 1, 2, 3…Conflicts just reveal the paradoxes and limits. Leadership teams should step up and reinforce high alignment, high autonomy (if there is a committed team), and a culture of high collaboration.

As a team leader, my approach revolves around fostering alignment and a shared vision among team members. We begin each week with a team huddle on Mondays and catch up on Fridays, ensuring everyone is aware of each other's tasks and any support needed. Additionally, I conduct weekly one-on-one check-ins, dedicating 30 minutes to each team member to discuss progress, challenges, and personal development.

Having clearly defined roles can be very beneficial. For example, having a manager play the role of discussion leader may not be as effective as having a neutral facilitator, depending on the situation. The role of an effective facilitator, when available, shouldn't be underestimated.

To align a team with divergent strategic goals, one must foster open dialogue to understand various perspectives. A shared vision encompassing all goals should be collaboratively constructed and mapped out as a clear journey. Better display them BIG & BOLD. Measurable KPIs ensure accountability and progress tracking through periodic stand up meetings. Collaboration, effective communication, and leadership by example are crucial for building a unified team. Celebrating successes and continuous adaptation maintain momentum and alignment.

Achieving alignment requires creating an atmosphere that values candid communication. Organize meetings where team members can voice their opinions and worries without worrying about repercussions. This will bring to light issues that have been buried and enable group study of possible fixes. Establishing a secure space for discussion in which the emphasis is shifted from personal agendas to cooperative problem-solving is essential to effective discourse. A feeling of oneness starts to take shape during this process.

Communication, communication, communication. Too much information is always better than not enough, and you can always reign it back, so I always believe in being fully open and ensuring that the team have the bigger picture

There's a company vision/NorthStar and your job is to translate these broad goals into tangible pieces (base principles) and answer how my team's inputs contribute to the org's outputs? The exercise I've applied successfully during my tenure as people manager is to facilitate structured sessions with the team, ensuring all voices are heard and serve as the connecting tissue of these ideas, ensuring a mix/tradeoff of open thinking - org alignment. I've seen keeping people involved in building a compelling team vision increases accountability and commitment while also improves clarity. In one particular instance, my team had differing ideas about where to focus resources, and emotions were high. I facilitated a structured discussion where we focused on the shared vision of the organization, and guided them toward our common goals. I emphasised the collaborative problem-solving approach, making it clear that the solutions had to come from the group, not just top-down decisions. Throughout the process, I stayed firm but fair, communicating clearly that alignment was critical to achieving our company’s long-term goals. Strategic goals discipline is about choosing what not we will spend our scarce resource after. Its important for each functional unit to define, explain, showing their alignment to achieving key strategic objectives. I emphasize the word strategic. Okrs and KPIs can help in several distinct ways to measure your progress and gain an insight into what needs to happen and how it should look when you have made the right progress. To say, measurement is needed throughout the journey. Systems, structure, people, culture, and discipline balance are key ingredients to the dish.

After defining the vision, align individual and team objectives with it. ?? Break down the vision into specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. Each team member should understand how their role contributes to the broader vision. ?? Create a transparent action plan detailing responsibilities, timelines, and expected outcomes. Regularly review these goals to ensure alignment and adjust as needed. ?? For instance, if the vision involves launching a new product, individual objectives might include market research, prototype development, and marketing strategy formulation. ?? This ensures that every effort is strategically focused. ??

Work with the team to align individual and departmental objectives with the newly defined vision. Then ensure that each team member understands how their role contributes to achieving shared goals. Set milestones, revise responsibilities, use KPIs/OKRs, etc. This is the step where the division should really be in the rearview mirror as the team moves forward with renewed unity.

Commitment is the foundation of success. It's the unwavering dedication to a shared vision, the unrelenting drive to achieve excellence, and the willingness to overcome obstacles together. When we commit to a common goal, we empower ourselves and each other to reach new heights, foster a culture of accountability, and create a bond that propels us forward, even in the face of adversity.

One of our memorable team-building exercises was at our state of team we did the LEGO Duck challenge. Each team member crafted their own LEGO duck, showcasing their individual creativity and strengths. When these ducks were combined, the result was not just a collection of ducks, but a vibrant display of collaboration and synergy—a metaphor for our teamwork.

To foster commitment, building trust and demonstrating a leader's engagement is really key . Acknowledge the challenges ahead and regularly express confidence in the team's ability to work together to overcome them. Try to encourage a culture of accountability where each member takes ownership of their part in the project.

Momentum of growth is the dynamic energy that propels organizations forward, fueled by consistent progress, innovation, and learning. It's the snowball effect that occurs when small wins build upon each other, creating an unstoppable force that drives success. To harness this momentum, leaders must foster a culture of experimentation, embrace failures as opportunities, and empower their teams to take calculated risks. By doing so, they'll create a self-sustaining cycle of growth, where progress feeds progress, and the organization continues to evolve, adapt, and thrive.

In addition to momentum, we need to commit toward measurement and a concerted effort toward refinement. Of course, we also need to make sure that we stay the course for a good amount of time before assessment, but especially when strategy isn’t agreed upon initially, we need to keep ourselves honest and accountable to our goals

Having different views is a healthy diversity status in any team. However, division never emerge from different views, rather it is a result of interest divergence. Some disputes can be an indicator of a serious matter. So, resolution of team division is not achieved by reconciliation meetings. It requires a thorough stakeholders and interest analysis to identify the key drive of the disagreement. Accordingly, open and transparent communication with external and internal stakeholders shall be enhanced. Also, strategic vision and goals have to be revisited. Good listening and trust re-build shall be initiated in parallel without enforcing consensus. What is really important is to look at the division as a wake-up call for improvement.
