Your team is divided on risk tolerance. How do you ensure everyone is on the same page in decision-making?
When team members diverge on their comfort with risk, achieving alignment is crucial for cohesive decision-making. To bridge the gap:
- Establish a shared understanding of the risks and rewards associated with different options.
- Facilitate open dialogue to allow each member to voice concerns and preferences.
- Implement a decision-making framework that respects diverse perspectives but moves toward a common goal.
How do you harmonize varying degrees of risk tolerance in your team? Let's discuss strategies.

-
Open dialogue is of great significance. Create a safe space where team members can express their thoughts and concerns without fear of judgment.Practice active listening to understand different perspectives and concerns. Show empathy for others' viewpoints, even if you disagree. Ensure everyone understands the meaning of risk tolerance and its implications for decision making. Create a shared understanding of the risks involved in different decisions and their potential outcomes. Encourage team members to find common ground and explore options that balance different risk tolerances. Work towards a decision that everyone can support, even if it doesn't perfectly align with their individual risk preferences.
-
In my experience, creating an environment where each team member feels heard is key. When everyone understands not just the potential outcomes, but also the reasoning behind each approach, it builds trust and helps bring the team together.

-
Aligning a divided team on risk tolerance requires establishing a common understanding of project goals and priorities. Begin by facilitating an open discussion where each team member can express their concerns and perspectives on risk. Use data-driven insights to evaluate potential risks and their impact, creating a shared basis for decision-making. Establish clear risk management guidelines that define acceptable risk levels and decision-making criteria.
-
View the risk factors and everyone's tolerances. Then, as in bumper bowling, the bumpers need to be put in-place. Do a check to see where each person's tolerance lies with a scenario-building story. Create a story having some different levels of risk offered to your team. You can keep it to 3 or 4 levels of risk. Outline each risk level, including outcomes if the risk was realized. Tell the story and the levels of risk. Have each person write down which scenario they'd be most comfortable with. One by one, discuss where each person landed and why. Create the middle scenario as a combination of all voices. What can they live with/what can't they live with? Craft the risk and decision-making norms around these.
