To clarify the objectives of the project, I find it very helpful to guide decision making by defining a hypothesis that we want to validate (you can find references on how to use this in the lean approach and UX research). I have found that this helps to keep an open mind and focus. For example, "we have a hypothesis that this will achieve result X", what do we need to do to make that happen? When someone comes up with new ideas, it also helps me to see if these ideas fit into the hypothesis to be validated, or if they open up new avenues of action, and whether or not they are relevant to the outcome we are looking for.
