I think what is really important is having strong foundations for a project. Never ever neglect the groundwork during initiation and planning. Even if it takes slightly longer than anticipated. That will help you to always find the true north, if you need to realign during your implementation. Identifying the right stakeholders and thoroughly engaging with the users of the current/future solution will make sure your definition is consistent and that you can always take a step back and realign your goals.
