When project scope balloons without warning, it's crucial to maintain stakeholder satisfaction. Here's how to adapt:
- Reassess and reset expectations through honest communication about the changes.
- Prioritize tasks to address the most critical aspects of the expanded scope first.
- Update your project plan and timeline, ensuring stakeholders are informed of any shifts.
How do you handle scope creep in your projects? Share your strategies.

Keep projects focused and as short as possible. Move projects into smaller sub-projects as appropriate. Close out sub-projects to maintain momentum and show results. Be aware of the penalties of scope creep that include financial and time impacts. Clearly define the project scope. As the foundation for your project, a clearly-defined project scope provides transparency to all collaborators. If you feel scope creep coming on, there are a few things you can do: Resurface the project scope. If project stakeholders are pushing for new deliverables, remind them of the project scope and what was—and wasn't—included in it. Hopefully, that will help the entire project team re-align on the project's requirements.

Communication is key! - Update and involve the stakeholders. Be honest about the situation. - Keep the focus and do the highest priorities first. - Update your plan and communicate it.

It is common for the scope of work to change unexpectedly! Adaptability and clear communication are key to making adjustments seamless. I always take a moment to realistically evaluate the expansion- determining whether it should be included immediately or deferred. Then, I make sure we outline and agree on the next steps so that we're all moving forward, with shared understanding and commitment to the updated goals.

Especially projects that run over a longer period of time often suffer from scope creep or scope changes as the project evolves. Keeping in regular communication with stakeholders about these changes is critical. My key tips are: 1. Discuss what's changing and why - refer back to a scope of work and work through it with your stakeholders to ensure everyone is aligned on what's changing and why. Manage expectations about what's realistic. 2. Don't just focus on additional work but also look at what the trade-offs could be. While new things have emerged, maybe other activities are now obsolete or can be deprioritised. 3. Outline options to stakeholders that show additional resource requirements in line with the different scope elements.
