Your mentor is overwhelmed with deadlines. How can you help them prioritize?

In the midst of a hectic schedule, I once mentored an incredibly promising individual. Despite the time constraints, I prioritized transparent communication. I openly shared my availability, setting clear expectations for our interactions. This fostered trust, as my mentee appreciated the honesty and over communication regarding availability. It reinforced the idea that effective communication, even in busy times, lays the foundation for a successful mentor-mentee relationship.

When my mentor is burdened with deadlines: 1) I would not confuse him/her by telling to use some frameworks. 2) I would ask him/her if help is needed, i would lend my support to lessen the load according to my experience/expertise. 3) I would also help him/her delegating the tasks and try to simplify work.

Being in a mentor position for someone, one has to find time to support their mentees despite other responsibilities and commitments. A pre-scheduled meeting and following the workflow to meet all the commitments may help people prioritise the tasks instead of getting involved in everything else. Yes, Transperency is paramount..Also, as a mentor, you have to be an inspiring example of it & of the way you manage your workload/over booked schedule..too. It's always better to let your mentee know about your difficulty but it's very important to be proactive in letting them know about it earlier than making it a last moment thing.....giving a wrong impression of them not being important. The gap between the last session till the next time you get free for them....can be filled in by giving a mini project, Task, Excersice based on the Mentoring done so far...for them to reflect & work upon...That Empowers them & keeps them engaged creatively.

Communication is the most important in mentoring, it does not work by email or having sessions every three weeks or more. Make sure you have the right time to mentor when you are assigned the activity, say no if you don't have it.

Ask if there is anything you can take off your mentors plate. 3. Be a reverse mentor. Sometimes we are so deep inside the jar, we can’t read the label. Help your mentor differentiate between must have vs nice to have as it relates to the deadline.

I do a Week in Review every Sunday. I look back at the week and see what has worked and, more importantly, what hasn't worked. Going forward I will adjust accordingly and look to improve for the upcoming week.

While mentoring multiple projects, my secret is to: 1. Craft to-do lists. 2. Set realistic deadlines. 3. Use my time with precision. Prioritization and mindfulness are the key. Above all, infuse passion into each project! ?

The way I deal with overwhelmed deadlines is: (A step by step process) 1. Write down the tasks that are needed to be done within the stipulated time. 2. Categorize the tasks. 3. Seek help/assistance for the once that are less important. 4. Create realistic deadlines 5. Follow them and assess your results.

To overcome a deadline I do the following things ??prioritize tasks, ?? break them into smaller steps, ??communicate about challenges, ??and manage time effectively. ??Create a schedule, ??focus on one task at a time, ??and seek guidance when needed.

When overwhelm hits, I ask myself what would I love? What would I love to feel right now instead of overwhelm? And then I tune into those feelings that I would love instead of the way that I am feeling now. This simple step helps the overwhelming feel so overwhelming but also helps put all that needs to get done in greater perspective.

Think about are your mentors priorities the same as yours! If they are you can unpick together. Encourage a team meeting to review projects and everyone’s priorities. This meeting should be where you brief people prior to attending to maximise the time so team members come prepared. Ideally someone independent facilitates the meeting to the best out of it. Work together to achieve the goals.
