Calibrated infrared lazer thermometer will be better..Temperature differences can be observed easily and quickly and help in quick intervention.

From the experience gained from working with rotating and static machines onboard ships , I find usage of a non contact Infrared temperature sensor during various operating condition will give a fair idea of temperatures experienced in various areas of the equipment like areas having sliding or rolling contact surfaces , areas under lubricating conditions , area under ventilation etc by which we could narrow down on particular area of the equipment under overheating and drain down and troubleshoot the actual cause of overheating in that particular area of equipment thereby intervene and avoid sudden breakdown caused due to the root cause reason.

check cooling medium and or process liquid temperatures to give indirect temperature of the marine equipment. Many a time this is interdependent and can have good read out of the machine temperature/ condition. A consistent temp log will be of better help than a spot check.

Common sense is the first step, a good enginner will know his / her equipment and know the trend of the equipment. Once a difference is noted heat guns are my preference as they are quick and easy and very accurate.

Check the low and high temperature of your engines via the thermometer calibration in your dashboard. Ensure engine sensor are in proper conditions to give sounds in case of too high temperature and round’s should be maintained at all time to ensure a safe working environment and risk mitigation. If it’s high temperature you take a drastic measure before it’s cause damage to the engine. Also Check cooling water system is in proper condition. Sometime dirty cooling water system can cause high temperature, dirty spark plugs, excessive clearance etc . Therefore rounds should be taking at all time to check engine running parameters with corrective measures without negligence .

A proper and standard machinery space must have means of monitoring the conditions of machinery. It can be auto with the use of sensors, it can be manually with the use thermometers. While some combine both. Also like some of the suggestion you have infra red hand held temperature checkers like raytek and other products. So if you have an over heating issue, first of all you have to check physically. If you have electronic way and physical means of checking then both must be the same temperature upon checking. Better still you can go to the machinery with a handheld temp gun and check to confirm in the case of both auto and physical means of checking are faulty. On confirmation that it is not a malfunction then you do the needful.
