Is your executive management framework aligned with your vision?

There are many management frameworks. How do you choose one? Generally, they all share some similar properties. But there is one truism: It's better to have a framework than to be disorganized. Choose one that looks good and move forward.

In my experience, I start by outlining a clear framework based on the company’s vision, focusing on strategic pillars like operations, talent, and growth. This helps set a roadmap for decision-making, ensuring every action aligns with long-term goals.

The executive team must be aligned in all the core principles of how all things will be done. Patrick Lencioni has a brilliant explanation of these principles in his book “5 Dysfunctions of a Team.” The team cannot deviate from those standards, and they must all communicate the same message in regard to them, as well as walk the talk. They must drive the expectations through their actions and words.

A Management Framework should be based on the structure of standards that have been proven to work internationally in a wide range of industries and scenarios. As a quality professional I fell in love ?? with ISO Systems. 1?? Know the context of the business your working in. Understanding that context is constantly changing so you need create and update a document on that context. 2?? Remain system and people focused. A system is a repeated set of steps that develops and serves a person/group want to create value for another person/group. That's my personal definition. 3?? Ensure both you and your system has the ability to change in the face of challenges. Be prepared and have a list of risks, opportunities and contingency measures.

All the leaders must evaluate the messaging they have been delivering to their teams to assure alignment. To do that, it is best to create the messaging prior to engagement. Getting executive alignment is what will drive the mission and vision of the organization.

I regularly evaluate if our processes and management style align with our vision. I’ve conducted team assessments and strategy reviews to ensure that our actions and priorities reflect our desired outcomes, adjusting as necessary.

It is crucial to have a guiding set of OKR's to drive alignment. They serve as your sounding board in decision-making and the initiatives you support.

Sometimes a fresh perspective can be invaluable. 1. Engage a Consultant: Consider bringing in an external consultant with expertise in executive management frameworks and strategic alignment. They can provide an objective assessment and suggest areas for improvement. 2. Benchmark Against Industry Leaders: Research how leading companies in your industry structure their executive management and achieve their strategic goals. In my experience, leadership in a dynamic environment has to be based on a framework of non-negotiable principles and values. However, at the same time has to be flexible to changes in markets, people and work culture. Executives must be great at holding onto principles like honesty, ethical behavior, and diversity. Executives must be equally great at pretending they no nothing at the "grass roots" and customer levels and being a sponge to absorb and act on real feedback.
