Your Corporate Finance team is underperforming. How can you get them back on track?

This may sound obvious but the first step is to double-check - why do you think they're underperforming? Do you frequently miss forecasts for reasons that other organizations in your situation would not? Do you have poor KPI's? Does budgeting take too long? Or is it just someone's opinion that they're underperforming i.e. it's really a personality conflict or the opinion of a senior stakeholder who just needs to be managed better? More than once I've charged off to boil the ocean on fixing a whole team and then later found that one simple fix would have delighted the leader who thought the team was under performing and I just should have asked more questions.. Critical to use objective data to assess performance wherever possible.

There are different reasons for the Finance team being underperforming.So You need to assess the cause and prepare an action plan together. The Finance team always stuck in a situation where the compliance issues and the interest of all employees collide. Honest discussion in a meeting asking for what caused the underperformance will heal the situation. The team needs to be well engaged in a decision making process with the Finance related issues and also encouraging and frequent rewards and with "Thank You for your service" can also bring visible change. Automation of the working system , additional responsibility with appropriate benefit packages are among the steps which brings out the team from the deep depression.

In my experience, monitoring stakeholder satisfaction is key to understanding how my teams are performing so I'll obtain feedback from a selection of stakeholders on a quarterly basis. Their input is critical to my understanding of how the service we deliver can be improved. Based on their feedback, I can consider what the root causes for the underperformance are. Once I've developed a hypothesis, I'll share the anonymised feedback with the team and facilitate a meeting to: - celebrate positive feedback received by the team; and - consider the constructive feedback, its root causes and corrective actions that we can take. I don't share my assessment of the root causes with the team - I test it through the course of the discussion.

Assess your criteria. Are they coming from ‘they must perform’ or from ‘WE must perform’. As a manager your are very much part of the team. If there is underperformance then there is a lack of alignment with the teamspirit with all teammates including the leader.

After assessing the probable reasons for underperformance, on-the-job training and coaching sessions can be organised to further enhance the competence, quality and skillset of the team. Finance is an ever-evolving area that needs constant dedication to learning and upskilling in topical areas such as advanced Excel skills, financial modeling and valuations, budgeting and forecasting, and presentation skills. This way the productivity of the finance team will be greatly improved.

Technology is a tool that has come to make life easier by streamlining mundane tasks and boring workflows. Underperformance of a corporate finance team could be alluded to the lack or inadequate usage of technological tools especially those relating to data analytics such as Excel, Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Python, etc. These tools, if leveraged effectively, would increase the productive capability of any finance team that is willing to use them. This is a probable solution to an underperforming corporate finance team.

Identifying existing performance gaps, providing training, and updating procedures to ease the process are good techniques. Additionally, sometimes people underperform because they do not feel responsible and accountable for what they do. So, delegating tasks and creating a sense of responsibility can also improve underperformance.
