‘Protest’ is a symptom of inefficient grievance redress mechanisms. The first thing is that reflection is needed. Secondly, where is the issue here- is it about past action or about future actions? If it is about future, there is a chance for additional dialoguing. If it is past, then there requires acknowledging human rights violations and addressing them. Now, the corporate needs to look at its role as - making profit to pay investors - along with being responsive to interests of communities and workers and planet.

Most often the community protest is triggered by a aggrieved employee and this employee uses community as a negotiating tool. We had an issue with an employee and it triggered community protest. We took support of community leader. We invited him and explained to him the situation. We further informed that one disgruntled employee will be responsible for large scale job loss in the region. We then called leader of another community and asked him to intervene. Initially both leaders stood against each other and put community ahead of jobs. But soon they both understood the gravity. The matter was resolved amicably. Grieving employee was paid for unclaimed leaves under the guidance of community leader.
