When a client's motivation starts to waver in counseling, I help them reconnect with their initial reasons for seeking help by revisiting their goals and eliciting change talk to remind them of the progress they've made. I validate their feelings, normalizing the ups and downs in the therapeutic process, and collaboratively set small, achievable goals to make progress more tangible. Additionally, I introduce variety in sessions by exploring new techniques or activities to refresh the dynamic. This combination of empathy, goal-setting, and variety keeps them engaged and motivated in their counseling journey.

I would ask them what’s getting in the way of their previous stated goals. Depending on their response I’m might ask whether they want to revisit and modify?

Great tips! Another effective approach is using motivational interviewing to help clients reconnect with their personal reasons for change, making each goal feel meaningful. I’ve also found that incorporating small rewards for completed ‘homework’ can reinforce positive steps forward, making progress tangible and motivating. Small adjustments, like pacing sessions differently or exploring new session formats, can also reignite engagement.

Motivation wavers throughout life for everybody regardless of their personal circumstances so the same will be true for an SUD patient. Practitioners should focus on understanding an individuals underlying causes of a decrease in motivation and avoid feeling frustrated. The most helpful thing anyone can do for a person is to validate them and stay with them through every phase of their journey. When a person‘s motivation waivers, they feel shame and expect others to be ashamed of them. Unconditional positive regard will allow them to feel valid and show them that their value is not dependent on a specific mindset. People grow when they feel nurtured and accepted. It’s our job to show that people matter at their best and their worst.
