As a coach, helping my clients to take initiative starts by showing them what is at stake if they don't. Sometimes, people are not motivated to take intiatives if they do not see the impact. The client draws up a plan themselves, I coach in analyzing the hindrances and how they plan to overcome it. I also coach them to see what is at stake (positively and negatively) due to their actions or inactions

Establishing a rapport with a client who is resistive to coaching calls for patience, empathy, and active listening. It's critical to establish a safe space where people may express their worries or fears about change and feel understood and accepted. Focusing on tiny, achievable goals rather than aiming for quick outcomes encourages confidence-boosting early victories. Posing inquisitive, open-ended questions to clients might help them reflect on themselves and feel more in control, which can lessen resistance. Fostering openness can also be achieved by meeting people where they are emotionally and redefining change as an opportunity rather than a challenge.

Acknowledging what is holding them back, what their hesitancy is a good starting point. Often when we name it we can then accept and then understand it, after which you can start thinking about how to move on.

This is a tough one but highlight the importance of action that leads to growth. Coaching a client who doesn’t take initiative is like being a personal trainer for someone who shows up to the gym, sits on the bench, and watches Netflix. Thanks for paying me but as a coach I want a win-win situation. So you can hype them up all day, throw motivational quotes at them like confetti, but if they don’t actually do anything, it’s just a one-sided TED Talk. It’s important to remind them that you’re not a magical genie. “I can give you the tools, but if you’re still binge-watching cat videos instead of working on your goals, we’re gonna be here a while.” Progress only happens if they leave the couch of comfort and start doing things.
