Start by acknowledging the shift and assessing the motivation behind the change to foster deeper self-discovery. If necessary, adjust the career plan; sometimes, it’s important to recognize that the shift isn’t solely about the career plan. People may experience uncertainty when forced to change, so it’s essential to encourage flexibility and an open-minded approach. In today’s world, everyone needs to learn how to maintain flexibility and an open attitude.

Let's say a client initially wanted to become a teacher but has recently expressed a strong interest in pursuing a career in environmental conservation. As a career coach, I would: Listen actively: I would listen attentively to their reasons for the change. Explore and assess: I would discuss their values, interests, and skills. Research and guide: I would provide information about various roles in environmental conservation. I would also suggest networking with professionals in the field and exploring relevant courses or certifications. Goal setting and action planning: We would then create an action plan they need to take. By following these steps, I can effectively guide clients through their evolving career aspirations.

When a client's career goals shift unexpectedly, approach the change with empathy and flexibility. Start by actively listening to understand their new aspirations and the reasons behind the shift. Facilitate a reflective conversation to help them clarify their motivations and values, ensuring they feel supported in this transition. Assess how their existing skills and experiences align with their revised goals, and identify any gaps they may need to address. Collaboratively explore potential pathways and opportunities that resonate with their new direction. Finally, provide resources and strategies for skill development and networking, fostering a sense of empowerment as they navigate this new career landscape.

Life happens, but we want to make sure they are not just being double-minded, which leads to instability... As a career coach, I'm always going to start with career identity program that includes an INDEPTH assessment.. SO I would reshare their assessment and invite them to show me how each area aligns through the funnels of personality, work outcome, values and skills... If it's a match then I switch gears and get started with strategic planning for it.

When a client’s career goals shift unexpectedly, I’d first listen carefully to understand their new direction and motivations. I would then help them reassess their skills and experiences to align with the new goals. By offering support and adjusting the action plan, I can guide them through the transition with confidence and clarity.
