Some people will dig their heels in and say, "This is where I'm stuck, and I'm not willing to do the work that is required to get me out of it." I'm seeing that now; they often want a new silver bullet. I do find that validating someone helps with letting go of their guard; however, understanding why the guard was up in the first place is important.

Be open to receiving feedback inasmuch as giving it. As service providers, we also receive feedback from clients. Always focus on the outcome and not the person.

Active listening is important in every case. If I listen to my client just to get defensive and prove that I am right, my client will respond in the same way. Listen well, be curious and respond after gaining knowledge. Your client will learn from you.
