Fancy excel and google sheet formulas are pretty much party tricks, good to show off but in reality you should not complicate things when these can be easy. Simplicity is key to brilliance and try to make your model as simple as possible. It would be prudent to make the model very neat by using some very simple ideas such as-: 1) use different colors to indicate the data source in a cell, for example green color where data is derived by using a formula, black for hard coded figures and Red for variable figures 2) It would be better to use some other tool designed specifically for budget and forecast than excel or google sheet 3) Make sure that data source is all verified and avoid broken links if using excel 4) make it as transparent.

Sometimes less is more... but other times less is simply... less. In many cases simplification through methods such as automation, standardization or consolidation will speed up your forecasting process, however that should never be done at the cost of providing right, accurate or complete information to stakeholders. The real question is what is the cost/benefit of a complex model vs a simplified model for your specific case? Maybe the model does not need simplification, it might need better quality input, training for the users or the preparers or just a revamping of the forecasting flow etc.

To add to this, one should focus on materiality and key variables while building a business model. Sometimes you end up spending so much time on the area which hardly has an impact on your topline or bottomline. You should sketch a broad plan in advance and decide on focus area and efforts according. This has helped in personally in delivering projects on time.

It is important to remember that stakeholders retain overall responsibility for budgets with the guidance of finance colleagues. To often in my experience there is a lack of accountability and ownership. Direction needs to be provided from the outset to set out high level objectives and an indicative budget based on the past and thoughts about the forthcoming year(s). CPI increases would be agreed for example. Ongoing communication is imperative rather than just email exchanges. Dialogue allows for sharing of thoughts, ideas and solutions especially in relation to areas likely to deviate from expected numbers.
