This is a tricky one and can be misinterpreted in many ways. There are many reasons why some bosses do not communicate. Having worked with non-communicating bosses some of the reasons are: 1. Lack of knowledge in the role. 2. Lack of self development in the area of team management. 3. Promoted without the relevant management skills. 4. Unable to express themselves using the business technical jargon. I once worked with an Agency boss who lacked writing skills because they left school early to work. As a result they could not write nor read. This was a person full of potential and could have done more but L&D team missed the signs and the opportunity to help them fulfil their potential. This is the reason why I went into adult education.

Once you identify what style your direct manager is, You wire your network accordingly. On your business One-on-ones, You set your expectations for your business relationship in reverse proactively to fill the gap and have things run smooth. If you feel that you are missing information that is flown vertically only through your boss and you think you might have missed it, be curious about the developments in areas that critically affect you. It is also very important that if you missed anything from your boss, You make him aware positively and track any on going repetition for mutual accountability. If your boss is someone who actually cares for you, it is good that you help him fill the gap if it was something unusual.
