Understanding the reasons why a BI team might resist feedback is important. Is it because they aren't sure what's expected of them? Are they afraid of being criticized? Or maybe there's a disconnect between what the team wants to achieve and where it fits into the larger picture for BI as a whole? But once you know what’s wrong, it becomes crucial that you communicate clearly. I often find it useful to explain how their tasks contribute towards wider business objectives. For instance, if I say “Your findings from this new dashboard will help us analyze customer behavior and develop laser-targeted marketing campaigns which should in turn boost sales”, people see that they are doing some valuable efforts.

One-on-One Conversations: Hold private conversations with team members to gather insights into their perspectives on feedback. This can help identify specific concerns or misconceptions.

As a BI leader, I can't stress enough the importance of clear communication when it comes to feedback. It's like coaching a sports team - you've got to be specific about the plays you want to see improved. Instead of saying "do better," show them the game tape and say "here's where we missed the mark, and here's how we can nail it next time." Provide Training on Giving and Receiving Feedback Feedback Training: Offer training sessions on how to give and receive feedback effectively. This can include techniques for delivering feedback in a way that is constructive and techniques for receiving feedback without defensiveness. Role-Playing Scenarios: Use role-playing exercises to practice giving and receiving feedback in a controlled environment. This helps team members become more comfortable with the process.

A resilient BI team is built by acknowledging attempts made and adapting plans correspondingly. I had a colleague once who was very good at data visualization but found it hard to deal with SQL queries. What I did was that instead of concentrating on weakness, I identified his strength in making powerful dashboards. Therefore, I changed his position so that he could mainly work as per his strength and interests. If we acknowledge the strengths each person has got and give them tasks accordingly; then our teams will be more productive because people will always want to learn something new when engaged in such activities.

This positive reinforcement encourages others to follow suit.
