You want to start a photography business. What are the first steps you should take?

I had a portfolio of the most recent wedding I'd shot as a guest, so I had some samples. And my candid wedding photography business was born. 2 weddings the first year and 27 weddings the next year. Most importantly: go and meet people in your city who work in the market you want to be in. This is what I did. I met caterers, wedding coordinators, church event managers, florists, and musicians. I put together a list of services I recommended and my brides and grooms appreciated getting my referrals. Take people out to lunch; or for coffee.

If you're shooting mostly weddings though, it might be more beneficial to have a "friendly" feel to your site, with testimonials for example. This all comes down to knowing your niche. One universal tip? Make it EASY for whoever is looking to get in touch. I see too many photographers with hard to find, or nonexistent contact information. I don't want to hunt for it! And neither does your potential client. Don't lose a lead like that!
