Once you have your purpose and audience clear, you need to craft your message. Your message is the main idea or point that you want to convey with your communication. It should be simple, concise and relevant. A good way to formulate your message is to use the message box technique. This involves writing down four key points that support your message, one for each quadrant of a box. These points should answer the questions: why, what, how and what if.

Write about topics in your industry and be consistent with your messaging. Don't try to be a one size fits all. You will look like a jack of all trades and master of nothing. Write for reputable sources and take advantage of podcasts, speaking engagements and making short informational videos. You need to have a continous message or theme to show that you have industry knowledge and ensure that it is relevant and timely.

4 Know your medium

The next tip is to know your medium. Your medium is the channel or format that you use to deliver your communication. It could be a document, a slide deck, a video, a podcast or a tweet. Each medium has its own strengths, limitations and conventions. You need to adapt your writing to the medium that you choose. For example, if you are writing for a document, you need to use headings, subheadings, paragraphs and bullet points. If you are writing for a video, you need to use visuals, voiceovers and captions.

For example, if you are writing a report, you could measure the number of downloads, views or comments. If you are writing a presentation, you could measure the level of engagement, feedback or satisfaction.

??Read?? To become a better writer yourself, it helps to read the things others have written. Try to understand: ?What makes you like a certain article? ?What causes you to drift off when you read someone elses work? ?What writing gives you emotion X/Y/Z? Use the findings in your own work. Example: You drift off when someone else just goes on and on and on about a detail, but you do the same in your own document? Try to figure out how to improve. Appendix? Summary? Footnote? Edit?
