Knowing your audience is good, and the golden rule of speaking (and standup comedy), but that only improves the speech you're giving. Video or at the very least audio record your speech, and listen to it back. It's painful, but it's generally productive.

The most important thing lies in knowing the age of the audience you are about to deliver your thoughts. Therefore, an important part lies in research about the content that needs to be delivered and the audience we are about to encounter with. If we deliver a topic that lies contrary to the target audience we will witness a discouraging output from the audience and we really don't want that, Do we? Therefore, before delivery do a quick research about your audience and modify your topic in a manner that is appreciable to all the age group and each type of audience.

Of course social media , YouTube and LinkedIn. But this cannot just build your confidence alone . You can try doing a presentation infront of small group of people to get a feedback or you can definitely join Toastmasters classes . It would be a great platform to build your confidence.

Building skills that make you a better performer on stage are as important as the content itself. You have 4 seconds to grab the attention of the audience. Start with something that they can relate to. Know you audience. Their age, demographic etc.. Most audiences today do not want to listen to a long stage presentation. More and more conference and tradeshow leaders are shortening the time that people get up on stage in favour of breakouts which are far more authentic and honest. The audience and in particular the younger audience want to get up close and personal with you. For that age group it brings purpose and value to their learning experience with you.

Define what the purpose of your talk is. Are you solving a problem? Presenting a new idea? Telling a story about something that's happened? From there, outline how you are going to deliver that talk, and then develop the story from there.

Professionals have been practising for years and that is why they are paid the big bucks. You can also start up and offer your voice to associations that will rarely pay a speaker especially an amateur. Someone has to be the guinea pig and you have to be smart enough to know when your ready. Getting the advice from speaker reps is always the preffered way to get a critique. If your topic is something that you are passioate about, then naturally you will also speak from your heart. No matter how many times you speak, you will come away having learned something new and valuable each and everytime.

I start almost every session or training with the reminder to "Give yourself permission to be there." Most nerves, anxiety and performance glitches come from the inner voice telling you that you no one wants to hear what you have to say. When you give yourself permission to be truly seen and heard, and you stand in your power knowing that your contributions matter, you can start to relax, breathe, relate to the audience and give a great speech.

Always repeat back a question before answering - it ensures the rest of the room have heard it, it gives you time to ponder your answer and it ensures you are both understanding the question accurately. And know your stuff! Rehearse your presentation in front of peers who will be honest and ask them to unpick it using a question format. This will enable you to prepare for the key Q & A's that you are likely to be asked.

Repeating the question back to the audience is critical for everyone. There may be a mixture of people attending the talk and those online who may not have heard the question. It can also help clarify the question in your mind.

Having a clear structure is super important. make sure that you clearly separate the important points. Come up with jokes or funny stories that are relevant to your speech and warm the audience's heart.

Feedback is important, so long as it doesn't undermine your confidence. At a conference, you can check with the organiser and so long as you ticked the boxes you said you would tick, they should be happy. Audiences are different - everyone takes away something different. The feedback you should look out for is anything that flags something you DIDN'T mean to do ("She got lost in the middle") or a direct response to something you DID mean to do ("I liked the interactive exercise"). You can work on the things you don't mean to do by being aware of them. And you can think about what you did mean to do - does it work? Would you do it again? Is there another way of achieving the same thing?

It is super important to understand how you are making your audience feel so a great way of developing the ability to read the room is to watch lots of TEDx, comedy stand-up and theatre and analyse how you feel whilst you are watching them. If the emotions you experience are aligned to how you wish your audience to feel, re-watch the show and try to identify what techniques the presenter/actor used to make you feel that way. Then work those techniques into your own delivery.

Tell stories around pictures. If you’re public speaking you should have a story to tell. It’s why you’re up there - to tell your audience what they don’t know. So unless you are presenting data - and even then, find an interesting way to present it - lead with pictures and tell your story with all the magic that you would use to tell a five year old a fairy story.

When you're on stage, you're in charge of the whole room. If something distracts the audience, pull focus back onto yourself, and make sure you're in charge. A pause always looks strong, so never worry about choosing your words carefully before you speak.

Check out the space. Many conferences have a general rehearsal the day before the event goes live. If you can, take advantage of it. Getting ready for a bigger stage can be all about self-care. Set yourself up for success by familiarizing yourself with the space so you feel more comfortable there. And then, take the stage by storm.
