1 What is lean manufacturing?

Lean manufacturing is a philosophy and a set of practices that aim to eliminate waste and optimize value in every aspect of production. Waste can be anything that does not add value to the customer, such as defects, overproduction, inventory, waiting, transportation, motion, and overprocessing. Value is what the customer is willing to pay for, such as quality, functionality, and reliability. By applying lean principles, you can reduce costs, improve quality, increase customer satisfaction, and enhance your competitive advantage.

Traditionally, Lean prioritized internal process improvements and cost reduction, but modern Lean has shifted towards a customer-centric approach, emphasizing value creation, customization, shorter lead times, and agility to meet customer demands. While traditional Lean focuses on manual processes, visual controls, and basic automation like Kanban cards and simple machinery, modern day Lean concepts integrate advanced technologies such as IoT, robotics, AI, big data analytics, and digital twins for smart factories, predictive maintenance, and real-time decision-making. In the current context, Lean manufacturing integrates eco-friendly processes, energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling, and responsible sourcing.

3 How to apply lean tools and techniques?

Lean tools and techniques are the methods and instruments that help you implement lean principles in your manufacturing processes. Value stream mapping is a visual tool that reveals the flow of materials and information from the supplier to the customer, while 5S is a system that organizes your workplace into five steps for creating a clean, safe, and efficient environment. Kaizen is a Japanese word for "change for the better" which involves everyone in the organization to make small, incremental improvements on a regular basis.
