1 Ask for feedback

The first step to using feedback is to ask for it. Don't wait for someone to offer you feedback, or assume that no feedback means good feedback. Be proactive and seek feedback from your contacts, mentors, peers, or even online platforms. You can ask for feedback after a networking event, a meeting, a presentation, or a referral. You can also ask for feedback on specific aspects of your networking skills, such as your communication style, your elevator pitch, your follow-up strategy, or your value proposition.

Getting feedback is difficult for most people. After receiving feedback, it is also difficult to apply this feedback to oneself in a positive way. The most difficult thing is to ask a question like "Can you give feedback?" Because for many people, this question can be perceived as showing the other party that they are inadequate. I don't find this right. The simplest information an individual can access to improve himself is feedback. In this case, the thing to consider is that the feedback is subjective. The feedback you receive from one person may not be the same from another. In this case, do not forget that you are the real evaluator, that is, the decision maker.

It's all too easy to have a negative gut reaction to any feedback even if it's constructive. Most people will be harbouring some imposter syndrome when it comes to networking and so feedback can push us off course when it should help us move forward. Firstly, be grateful for the feedback. If your goal is to be a better networker then I would be actively seeking feedback as it will help you to garner better results in the long-run. Secondly, take it in the way that it was meant- to be helpful rather than feeling judged. Perhaps you can also offer some feedback to the person who gave it to you that can also help them?

2 Be open and receptive

The second step to using feedback is to be open and receptive to it. Don't take feedback personally or defensively. Instead, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Listen actively and attentively to the feedback, and ask clarifying questions if needed. Thank the person for their feedback, and acknowledge their perspective and experience. Avoid arguing, interrupting, or dismissing the feedback, even if you disagree with it.

Feedback is a sensitive issue. The other person will evaluate you from their own perspective. You should consider feedback as input rather than personal judgments. Thanks to these inputs, you can create your own feedback pool and take your next actions accordingly. At the point where you take feedback personally, you can limit your areas of development. For this reason, I recommend you take a step back and examine yourself.

The third step to using feedback is to evaluate and apply it. Don't accept or reject feedback blindly. Instead, reflect on the feedback and compare it with your own goals and expectations. Consider the source, the context, and the evidence of the feedback. Filter out the irrelevant, biased, or inaccurate feedback, and focus on the constructive, specific, and actionable feedback. It is also difficult to give feedback. It is a sensitive issue. One sentence out of your mouth may reduce the quality of the feedback. You can consider the feedback as an observation. Try to make sure that what you are offering is feedback rather than sharing judgment. Be aware that you are contributing to the development of the other person as your first priority. Build and convey your sentences according to your observations. Try to put your personal judgments aside. Remember that as a result of your feedback, the other person can chart a new path for himself.

5 Be respectful and helpful

The fifth step to using feedback is to be respectful and helpful when giving feedback. Don't give feedback that is rude, vague, or irrelevant. Instead, give feedback that is polite, clear, and useful. Use the sandwich method: start with something positive, then give the constructive criticism, and end with something positive again. Use examples and evidence to support your feedback, and avoid generalizations and judgments. Offer suggestions and resources for improvement, and express your support and appreciation.
